We are about to remodel our hall bath, including replacing the not in great condition alcove tub. We are trying to determine if we should go with an acrylic/fiberglass tub or step up to cast iron. We have heard through friends that the new acrylic tubs aren’t very strong and can crack and some say they are susceptible to staining. But looking at the cast iron tubs, it seems like they all don’t have great enameling with streaks, runs, and an orange-peel texture.

What are the H&Gs thoughts on tubs?

as the owner of two new to me cast iron claw foot tubs I can say unequivocally they are the most comfortable bathtubs I’ve ever had and I had no idea what I was missing

seriously…when they say they don’t make ‘‘em like they used to, this is what they are talking about

Most people rely on the little styrofoam blocks the factory installed under the tub. Cracking comes from flexing, which still occurs with the styrofoam blocks, to some extent.
All flexing can be eliminated by setting the tub in a bed of mortar, and pressing it down in it to get a full coverage, rock solid base.
All that aside, cast iron tubs are far superior.
