True. But the reason for this is because they go to the markets everyday and get fresh food, enough for a day or two. Unlike Americans, that mostly rely on packaged convenience foods, they don't use their fridge for bulk storage.
This was one of the first of many examples that opened my eyes to how Europeans, in some ways, actually have a higher and better standard of living. They eater better, for less.

Their standard of living is pitifully beneath ours. Look at the table below. The only countries similar to the US in home size are Australia and Canada. As P.J. O'Rourke wrote, "I'd rather be a junkie in Houston, Texas than King, Queen and Jack of every one of you Europeans."
