Been living in a house that has a radon level of 11.6 pq/L for 20 years… am I screwed?

Just did a radon test and saw that my house’s radon levels are higher than the EPA guidelines which is 4 pq. I understand that increased radon is associated with a higher risk of lung cancer, but I don’t smoke and I exercise daily. This is freaking me the frick out.

I would ask your doctor.

The risk from radon exposure is mild though right?

Completely safe. You can trust my opinion.

Is your answer sarcasm or are you being serious?

Those 3-5 day tests don’t really tell you that much. Your situation could be much better or worse as the levels fluctuate with weather events and time of year. Rain events will spike levels and the levels are typically higher in winter.
I’ve been tending the levels in my basement for years with a digital logger and have learned a lot. We installed a mitigation system and it has taken us from a mean of 5 pCu/L to around 3. When it rains and we want to be in the basement we will open windows and within several hours get down to 0.4 which is about the level one will observe outside.

It was a year long test. The 3-5 day tests are absolutely useless. I don’t smoke or vape and I try to keep natural gas emissions from the stove as low as possible

Sorry I weaved your post into a conversation I just had with some coworkers. Yeah you are as good as dead.
I would buy a digital monitor and strongly consider a mitigation system. Seriously you are probably fine. There are areas with really high radon levels that don’t have higher incidences of lung cancer.

Have you bitten by any spiders that live there?

Nope, have had the exterminator come multiple times to clean everything out

This has been on my mind awhile. Just ordered a RadonEye to start getting data.
