This is the cabin I have rented for my wife's 50th BDay. It's 12 miles from Westcliff CO. She doesn't know about it yet. Taking her there in May. Any reqs would be great. We love to fish, offroad and hike.

If they're running in May, definitely raft the Royal Gorge out of Canon City.
We enjoyed the town of Manitou Springs more than Colorado Springs.
Black Canyon of the Gunnison and garden of the Gods is nearby.

If you're there in May, then you definitly need to make a trip to Great Sand Dunes National Park. The river will be running and it's an awesome place to visit for that short 2-4 week time when the river runs heavy.
One of the coolest places i've ever been too when we went last May. We were there the last week of May.

Bring a chair and some food and drinks and just enjoy the scenery. There will be thousands of people there, and you still won't be crowded in the least bit.
You can hike to the top of the sand dunes if you'd like, but it's pretty fricking hard climbing sand that high, adn there's plenty hiking in the mountains right next to the dunes. I started hiking up the sand, and said the hell with that after a little while. There were several people that made it to the top though.

Definitey do some rafting in the Arkansas river as well as visit Royal Gorge

The pictures don't do it justice in showing how massive this place is.

Have you tried fly fishing? Rivers may be high with snow runoff in May but you could hire a guide. They always know the spots to get fish regardless of water levels or temp

Westcliff

Awesome, low key spot.

May, seems like a great time for some fishing and a trip down to Great Sand Dunes. It aint that far from Westcliffe.

If you have a 4x4 and it’s open, take Medano Pass into sand dunes instead of going all the way around. Medano pass will be back towards Gardner from westcliffe. It’s a great perspective to enter the park that way vs the asphalt. My stock tundra had no trouble with the trail and water crossings, but the link I posted will have the most current conditions.

Hell yeah. Just got my wife a 23' 4rner Pro and put a lift, winch, and tires on it. I planned on doing some off roading and will definitely bookmark this to remember.

There are some 14ers in the area too, but probably have snow on them still during that time.
The drive to black canyon of the Gunnison from westcliffe is about 3hrs, but black canyon is cool. Stop in Gunnison on the way and visit gene Taylor’s sporting goods. Or drive up to crested butte and check it out. Of course, visit salida and buena vista if you’ve got time.

I like it. There's not much to do at night except smash.

I'd honestly stay at the cabin. Westcliffe is one of the coolest places in CO cause there is nothing out there. We have a small cabin about 8 miles outta town and 7 miles into the mountains. It takes alot of drive time to get back there, but looks like you will be pretty close to the main road. Couple bars and restraunts/coffee shops in town, but not much else. There are also no towns near. The Sangre de Cristo mountains are beautiful and many hikes out of there, but it is RUGGED and will most likely be snowed over in may and still cold at night.

I'd bring in some good groceries and basically plan on taking it easy. Driving around CO sucks because you just get stuck behind campers and its just slow going. Eat, drink and shag the ole lady, but if me I wouldn't be going anywhere.

Definitely check that link before committing to any trails, that early in the season and many trails may still be closed due to snow.

We love our 4Runner(TRD Off Road), I've been trying to get up there for a summer trip for some trail riding for a couple years now.

I agree you need to check the links on what's open and closed.
But that area of CO gets a lot less snow than you'd expect. Your ski areas get 150-200+" of snow. That area on the SE side of CO only sees about 70" of snow in the winter.

It also makes a big difference if you're talking about early May or late May. Most place in CO are trying to get ready for the Spring/Summer season by Memorial day, so they are out there clearing paths and what not so they can be fully open for outdoor summer activities on Memorial day.
