That's not average cost of ownership, you don’t own anything at that point. That's probably an average figure for purchase costs.

To OP,
I like my older vehicles. Mine: 2004 Tahoe @100k miles, 2004 gmc sierra @ 50k miles, 2006 2500hd Silverado @ 250k miles. Hers: 2017 Dodge Caravan @160k miles. All are paid off and hers is the next to be upgraded now that most of the kids are out doing their own thing.

We have a Lincoln Aviator (2020) and a Jeep Wrangler (2011). We have one kid, whoever is on kid duty drives the Aviator and the other drives the Jeep. I work from home and my wife’s work is only 4 miles away. It doesn’t really make sense for us to have two “nice” vehicles. When we go anywhere as a family we use the Aviator.

I view these as two separate questions. The first is whether you should get into 2 car payments, which IMO, the answer is no. The second question is whether you should have to ask your wife's permission to buy a car, which IMO, the answer is also no.

She's right. You don't need a new car.

Go buy a new boat or a side by side instead.

Now you absolutely have to buy yourself a new vehicle. It’s a test. Pass the test wisely.

That's what it means to be a man. You work hard to support your wife and kids the best way you can. If someone has to drive the POS beater, it's dad/husband. You are better equipped to deal with a breakdown. But, then again, i'm an old white guy, what do i know.

Currently, I am second-guessing my decision to be married. Sometimes, she is brilliant, and sometimes, she is a doofus. Something got to shake. I am not sharing anything.
