What’s most important to you first? The melody or the lyrics.

For me it is always the melody. If the melody doesn’t grab me I don’t give a shite about the lyrics.

I’m sure Taylor Swift is a good lyricist but I have not heard one song of hers that has a good melody. They are extremely meh.

While I generally agree, on occasion, vocals will grab my attention.

All about lyrics for me. I want to listen to the story. If the singer is not laying out a story, then it’s just jibberish

The beat

You can’t be dropping fire lyrics without a dope beat.

I listen to talk radio. I don’t think I’ve listened to a station with music since I was in high school.

I know this is old school. But, Merle Haggard could tell a story better than most in his songs. And I don't believe I've ever heard a bad Haggard tune. RIP Merle

But you know what music is. And you have heard it in the last 30 years...right?

By far. Its poetry set to music. Otherwise its simply a jingle.

90% this

I can listen to foreign songs if they have a good beat though.

Mais non, Mais non is an example

Elton John may have made billions but without Bernie Taupin doing the lyrics, no way he ever gets that popular!

Nah. Roger Waters was. Taylor Swift is a jingle writer.

Depends. I’ll always associate a song with the lyrics I first hear in it…. The melody helps me remember it.

For example Hallelujah… it’s far from any sort of Christian or Christmas song. But when my church played it one morning around Christmas a few years ago with the bell choir (no lyrics), the original version of the song was all I could relate to. It was an uncomfortable moment.

The perv could get me into the van with a good pop punk musical hook.

I usually don't listen to the words so much.
