Does changing rear gears require you to reprogram the motor?

The title is pretty self-explanatory but if I wanted to change the gears in a vehicle. Would I need to reprogram the motor or do anything else in particular, besides changing out the gears?.

No, think most vehicles use a wheel speed sensor to feed the speedometer these days. If it's something older that uses output off the transmission output shaft then you might need to adjust something.

Not "tune the motor" but reprogramming the computer to function with the new ratio in mind is a good idea. fixes shift points and speedo. If it's old you can just change the speedo gear.

This would be on a new truck. Looking at a new F150, would change the gears out after the warranty runs out. It has 3:31, want 3:73.

You most likely would need to reprogram it. I'm sure it'll not like having a wheel speed vs shaft speed mismatch

Wondering the cost and PIA to have it done. Better to to order a truck and eat the higher cost or make changes down the road.

It’s 3.31:1 and 3.73:1. Go 4.3:1 or 4.6:1, especially if you have the ecobeast.

Probably cheaper to order it like you want than it'll be to pay for a regear, especially a 4x4.
Or just don't bother with a regear and lose the top 2 or 3 speeds of the transmission when towing heavy. They've got 10 gears anyway.
I went through some bullshite to get the 4.30 rear end from the factory in the F250 I had. In hindsight, totally not worth it. The 3.73's I had in my next truck were fine. Deep ratios make more sense but unfortunately are not popular and are hard to find. Just don't worry about it.

You would need to have the pcm tuned. The pcm is coded for the factory ratio and will throw a p1635 code if you changed ratios. Trans may also shift harsh. The pcm is looking at wheel speed, trans speed, rpm etc. Speedometer correction is built into the pcm for changing tire sizes but that will not account for the ratio change.

Find one with the 3.55’s and be done with it .

I can't, that is the issue.
I really want to keep my GMC because it paid off. But the issues it is having and the rebuilt transmission is getting some miles on it, don't want to put anymore $ into it.

Yeah I remember all the troubles you had with it . My wife had a 19 f150 with the 5.0. I think it had the 3.31. We pulled a side by side on a 16ft tandem trailer with it occasionally and it did fine.

reprogram is relatively cheap. You can buy the programer and do it yourself it isn't hard.
