A group of us will be in Europe this summer, and looking for ideas to round out the trip. This is a senior trip and we will have 4 families and a total of 16 people traveling. We are spending 4 nights in Barcelona, then getting on a cruise ship. This is the itinerary for the cruise.

When we get off in Rome, this is where we need to decide how to end the trip. None of us have been to Rome, I am hearing a couple of days is enough time to hit the highlights. We are looking to fly home on the 23rd of July (flights are not yet booked, we can fly from anywhere but price is a concern.) Do we make a jump to something like Naples, Venice, Antifa Coast or just spend the entire 6 days in Rome.

6 days in Rome is too much. Can easily take in the highlights in 2-3 days.

If willing to push further east; I’d throw 2-3 days in Istanbul in. Turkish Airlines often has good prices. From a historic perspective; very close ties to Rome. Vibrant culture and surprisingly inexpensive.

Alternatively; I’d throw London or Amsterdam into the mix for 2-3 days.

Gets you closer to home and shortens the return flight. Also major airports keeping the flights relatively inexpensive.

I love Rome, but with six days , I would go to Venice, especially if you can fly home from there.

Look at his cruise itinerary. He's coming from two days in Pisa/Florence.

I love Rome, but it's a miserable place in July.

Go somewhere else in Italy. Venice is the obvious choice, but OP doesn't have to make the obvious choice.

I just saw how cheap flights are out of Rome to other cities in Europe and such a move looks like it might reduce our flight cost by 1/3, this opens up a lot of options to explore.

Personally I wouldn't fly anywhere, the last thing I ever want to do is jump on another plane in Europe mid trip. But I know some don't mind it at all.

You can catch great flight deals out of Naples, Venice, Milan, and Rome. All large airports with directs to the USA last I checked. They may all be the same.

I would think you'd want 3-4 days in Rome if you really want to hit it well, and not be in a rush. Its also Summer and very busy so things may take longer. So, that gives you 2-3 days. I'd personally consider splitting up. Being with 16 people for 7 days is going to get annoying, and I don't mind big families. But I can almost promise someone is going to hate someone by that time.

I'd consider training to Venice, hitting the almafi coast, Cinque Terre, etc. I don't think 7-10 days is too much in Italy by any means and you already get a taste of Spain and France earlier in the trip so I don't think getting a new country makes much sense. But, sounds like a great trip!

ETA: IMO Italy is one of the best places in the world to have a day to just wander. Especially away from tourist areas in small towns and the country. But even somewhere like Rome. Just find a church, Castle, Park (National Park!), etc. and go wander and take your time. Have a mid day glass of wine and just enjoy being on Island Time.
