re: Why no playoffs?Posted on 8/3/08
15 years ago, I felt like the ONLY true NATIONAL champion could only be acheived if every conference had representation. The BCS formula was the correct system for a 2 team playoff. With 130+ teams and 11 conferences, its too small of a sample size for a 2 or 4 team playoff. the nfl has a 14 team playoff for 32 teams. Which ever team goes 4-0 in this playoff deserve to be THE TRUE NATIONAL CHAMPION if its the sunbelt or SEC representative. These were the top teams of 2008 when this example was made. If I have time, I will insert the 2023 teams to this format.

The 16 team playoff will have every conference champion go, as well as having 5 at large bids.

Too much to try to digest. Here is a far simpler version that crowns an indisputable champion.
A sixteen team invitational tournament using a selection criteria and seeding format the same or similar to March Madness. By doing so each conference would have at least on representative. Then it’s played out over 4 weeks.
In my opinion that would eliminate situations similar to the current one. If a team can’t make it to the top 16 they really have no business playing for a national championship anyway.

Or how about an unbiased system where we put all of the info in (record, sos, margin of victory, etc ) in to a computer system and see what it spits out? Instead we get the eye test where people just decide who they think is better.
