Patterson is the brains and makes the calls for that defense. Bumpas isn't the answer.

Someone said he is merely a puppet and some other coach on the team is making that defense good?

That's the word around the campfire. Gary Patterson the head coach runs EVERYTHING (allegedly) for their D. Patterson is to Bumpas as Saban was to Muschamp in '03. Except Bumpas isn't supposed to have the ability of Muschamp...

My good friend's brother plays football at TCU (hint hint, he is a freshman linebacker from Houston). He said the rumor about Bumpas being a puppett is entirely untrue. Bumpas supposidly calls all the plays/blitzs/coverages/schemes. I'll trust his information over someone who posted it on tigerdroppings.

Good for you. You are "someone who posted it on tigerdroppings?" Are we supposed to trust you?

No, probably not. But, like I said, I do have a legitimate inside source. I can't prove it to you, but that is just what was relayed to me.

I've got your back on this one. I follow TCU football avidly...

From a thread the other day:

Besides Bumpas doesn't run the D at TCU. Patterson does.

Me:

quote:

I'm a TCU grad - and while he's long been under Patterson's wing - he's no longer the "apprentice" or puppet... I'm telling you that as of late '06, it's more Bumpas than Patterson.... Patterson would have a hard time replacing that guy...

AlwysATgr

so how much talent/experience does TCU get to work with say compared to us?

Me:

quote:

I'm a Slidell transplant. I was a Senior when LT was a freshman... the program was just starting to come out of the dark ages. We looked back at the Sammy Baugh era like LSU did it's Billy Cannon days. Until the 1984 Olympics, TCU had the world record in the the 4X100 Relay for years but could never translate it into football success. The late '90s saw a slew of TCU players making the NFL (thank you Cowboys) even as the school was bounced from conference to conference.

They do a remarkable job considering he's behind much larger schools in bigger conferences. TCU has enrollment somewhere in the neighborhood of 5,000 students - about 1/5 LSU's size and 1/10th UT's. It's a private school and is a bit more academically-focused than most.

From what I've gleaned - recruiting takes a little more homework. Within Texas this means - diamonds in the rough looked over by the state schools, catering to upper-end prospects who have academic goals in addition to sports, and spending more time with the families of those "who want better lives for their children"... Their schpeel probably sounds a LOT like Vandy's.

Their conference opens up a lot of territory as well as s network of farm state feeder schools the coaches have had ties with for 20some years...

I would love to see what Bumpas could do with the SEC talent pool... He'd definitely improve the gameday intensity level in players - he's got something to prove - and he wants his players to project the same.

Bumpas has always run the 4-2-5, and taught it to Patterson. Nowadays, the student has become the teacher.

The other Bumpas thread...

I agree with you, I think Bumpas is the right guy 4 the job!

I trust the tcu grad. I would be happy with bumpas. Everything I hear is its going to be keonning unless k-state gets him. I wouldn't be suprised if a dark horse candidate gets this job.

How much credit for TCU's success on D can be given to Bumpas seems debatable. But I don't see how one can deny him some credit. Else, he wouldn't be the DC.

What is impressive about TCU is how well they stymied Utah (a good spread option offense) and slowed OU (a scoring machine). They probably have talent comparable to Utah and a magnitude below OU.

hell yeah, lets bankroll on a guy who's spent 28 years in complete obscurity and just now has landed on people's radar in the last 20 months

Not for this program - not at the level we're capable of playing - not ever

Obscurity to you, maybe... We knew about him here for a while before he arrived at TCU because of his connections within the Southwest Conference...

And another positive I can say stemming from his "obscurity" - it speaks to his sense of loyalty to his peers and dedication to the development of his system. Those 28 years were spent largely within the same circle of coaches developing what is now a highly respected TCU defense...

How many people do you know that ever heard of Mike Leach before he was with Texas Tech?
