I'll be on the chains for our crew at the Cedar Grove-Calvary Day game.
We had two playoff crews this year. You are guaranteed the first two rounds and unfortunately we were done after the second round and so since we were the last crew to work on the field we get to be the chain crew for our crew that is doing a semi on the field tomorrow.

We aren't guaranteed any.

They have a great shot at a final. Fingers crossed.

Finals are a blast, I've been twice. Semis are more intense.

You forgot Benedictine as well. Savannah has turned into a really good athletic base in the past 10 years.

It’s cool Keith Brooking is on staff there as well. His son a pretty good TE they say.
I’m a native of savannah as well.

I've missed doing a quarterfinal 2 out of the last 3 years by less than a full point. 2 years ago we missed it by a half of a percentage point and that was due to our film pretty much being non-existent in our first round game, that still chaps me. We would have got a quarter that year if not for that. We finished 38th, 6 spots out(top-32 make it to the quarters). I haven't done a quarter and beyond on the field yet, I will, just keep doing what I'm doing and continue to try to be better.
This is the 12th year that our association has been in existence. We have had at least one crew make a quarterfinal in I believe 10 of those 12, but never could make the jump to a semi. We finally broke that seal last week and they are only 2 spots out of getting a final. (Top-8). They are .06 out of 8th going into tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

I’ve been to qtrs all but 2 years since 2014. Semis 7 of the rest.

Jealous.

We don't have set crews until w/about 3 weeks left in the RS. Some associations do. I wouldn't be opposed to it. I'm an officer and if I have my vote I'll be for set crews, which I was against just a couple of years ago. A lot of guys will get pissed b/c they will get the crappy games every week but that should be incentive to work harder.
I'm the #2 FJ and I have worked my butt off to get there. When I first came into the association I was at best a C-/D+ official. Now I would say I'm a B+.

So your association sends the worst refs to the crappy games?

We try to give everyone a good/big game regardless of skill/talent level. Some can handle it and some can't, just like everything else. We especially try to give younger officials(in terms of experience) a bigger game to give them the experience.
But yeah going to set crews would exacerbate that b/c the crews would be tiered.

As a coach, that would suck balls if you're at a lower-tiered school. It is hard enough to build a program, and now you're going to send the worst officials to the game? That's brutal.

I see where you're coming from and you're not wrong, but that happens more than you think.
But like everything else, it's an opportunity to grow and learn. You can actually learn a lot in games like that.

Meanwhile, I'm getting screwed over by officials who are learning the game. I've coached several sports in Ga where they already do this on some level and it just sucks. Officials and coaches alike are not perfect and make mistakes, but when you constantly get the new officials who are learning the mechanics and rules of the game it affects so much more.

Fair points. And it always hasn't been this way.
Used to be that you wouldn't see a varsity field for at least 4 years if not 5. You spent the first 3-4 years doing JV/middle school honing your craft while doing clocks on Fridays and by the time you got to a varsity field you were ready. It took me 4 years and even then it took another 3 or 4 for everything to slow down for me.
But now w/the shortage of officials due to crazy parents/coaches/etc a lot of new officials get thrown right into the fire on Fridays and their lack of experience is amplified.

I hear you. There’s no good answer. I do worry about new officials staying on because they get blasted by parents/coaches on a daily basis.
