In a bizarre attempt at maximum cope, the media is hailing The Marvels as the largest ever theatrical opening by a black female director. When, in fact, the movie is actually the largest box office bomb made by a black female director.
Now, Disney's animated 'The Wish' is set to top that failure, falling well below box office predictions and bringing in only $32 million over a five day period including the once lucrative Thanksgiving weekend.

Disney’s new animated Wish movie is bombing at the long Thanksgiving weekend five-day box office.
Initially expected to top the box office and come in at first place, there is now a possibility Wish will come in third, trailing behind Hunger Games and Ridley Scott’s Napoleon.
Blame Deadline for the fake hype who originally said Wish was going to top the Thanksgiving weekend box office but much like how the sight usually reports on the numbers — that’s all wishful thinking

Another miss from Disney at the box office -- the studio's latest original animated movie bombed with moviegoers over the holiday break ... marking just the latest flop for 'em.
Of course, we're talking about "Wish" ... with Ariana DeBose as the main character and Chris Pine as the big bad and a bunch of other cute side characters. Unfortunately, none of them were enough ... 'cause "Wish" only made $31.7 million through the 5-day "weekend."

What do The Marvels (2023), Strange World (2022), Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023), Lightyear (2022), and Haunted Mansion (2023) have in common?
They were all underperforming movies produced and distributed by The Walt Disney Company.

In addition to the lower-than-hoped box office numbers of Wish, its reviews have also been pretty mixed. Depending on where you get your movie reviews, you can expect to hear that Wish is the best Disney movie ever made…or one of the worst Disney animated films to ever exist.

Honestly that is the most Disney thing possible these days.
Disney movies used to have wide appeal. Now they are becoming increasingly divisive.

Yes, they are becoming more divisive, but humanity in general is becoming more divisive too.
If Aladdin was made today, this board would be complaining that Disney was promoting pro-Muslim rhetoric.

If the resulting product is good enough, the bitching goes away.
The quality hasn’t been there for a while now.

Is also not true, considering how poorly reviewed this movie is.

Ehh, that's not necessarily true, people are taking stances on movies before they even come out now, regardless of whether they suck or not.

Agreed, but that has more to do with the entertainment industry in general where these companies are expecting their workers to produce triple the content compared to the 90's, at a fraction of the cost.

How so? It’s the same stories recycled every time.

Nonsense. The biggest complaints about the live action remake were how poorly cast Jafar and the Genie were.

Because the original Aladdin had already been made and it was beloved by many because everyone on here was more whimsical and less cynical i.e. a kid when it came out.
If the original Aladdin were to come out in 2023, especially amid all the Israel/Palestine stuff, you better believe there would be boycotts of the movie.

Well sure, if they tried to make it a story about Palestine that would for sure happen.
And that would be justified.

The original Aladdin had no political statements or overt social commentary.
The ME setting was just the backdrop.
The latest Aladdin was actually decently supported, and the only issue anyone had was the addition of the “strong woman” song that wasn’t in the original.
Now, I wouldn’t argue with you if said Pocahontas would be vilified, but Caucasians weren’t vilified in every media form when that movie was released.
You should have gone with Pocahontas as the movie you referenced.

They still aren't now.
Off the top of my head, Ant Man and Obi Wan had good white guys and bad black people.

Oh stop it, people are boycotting movies now because reporter surface that ancillary characters are gay. Just the fact that Disney was making a movie with a middle eastern setting would be enough for many to ring the "go woke go broke" bell.

The bad black person in that movie is a race swap. The original character is not black.
