Flying to JNB via DBX on Emirates in December. 777 to DBX and A380 to JNB. First time for us to either location or business class. Have a 14 hr layover in DBX. Will be sleeping for some of that but also curious to see some of Dubai while we're there even if it's from the window of a car. Wife is a little concerned about current tensions in the region.

Any thoughts or suggestions on how/who to get a ride around town with? Thx

I'd be more worried about my personal safety in Johannesburg.

I had a 12 hr layover and opted to rent a hotel room in the terminal to shower, sleep, eat. Was well worth it.

Going with friends who are from SA. They moved to US after getting robbed at gun point.

Flown through there many a time. 14 hours is a long enough layover to leave the airport, go check out some stuff, and be back in plenty of time to catch your flight. That said, sometimes it can be a huge pain in the arse getting back into the airport.

I generally have a hotel room inside the terminal (you never leave the secure area) - walk the terminal end-to-end a couple of times to shake out my legs after the flight, get a meal and a few drinks (plenty of decent places to eat), shower, sleep for a few hours (however many hours gets me close to local time wherever I'm going), then get another meal before heading out.

As for the tensions in the region, Dubai generally isn't affected by all that. Should be pretty benign, unless you're planning on rolling around with your kippah on your head.

If you were up to it I would at least go to Dubai Mall. You could grab an Uber there. It’s the biggest mall in the world. You could check out Burj Khalifa, maybe catch a fountain show, and grab a bite to eat.

I went to the lounge for the flight in. It was an 8 hour layover. I was miserable. The sleeping “pods” weren’t great.

Out of the frying pan. Into the fire.

We had a 19- hr layover and ended up doing two tours. One half day tour of Dubai (burj kalifa, traditional tea, the mall, etc) and a second tour of SUV craziness out in the sand dunes and a “traditional” dinner out in the desert with belly dancing and other performers, along with camel riding.

You could easily fit one of those tours in your 14-he layover. And since you’re in biz class, you have access to the showers in the lounge and ample food and drinks.

Enjoy!

Been to Dubai several times. Absolutely nothing to worry about with tensions in the region.

UAE doesn't put up with that nonsense

Was recently in Doha, which I realize isn’t Dubai but it is similar. I did the city tour and had no problems with tensions from the region, would assume it’s the same in dubai

Just got back from Dubai this week. Flew the new A380. Was awesome! Cabs are very efficient there. They have the system down at the airport. Take cc and easy to get in and out to areas of interest in the city.

I can tell you for one the A380 will be way better. Make sure to hit up the bar.

Tensions in DBX is not an issue. JNB is a bigger concern -- when we had a stop on our way to another country I had a car service pick us up, bring us to the 4 Seasons, and bring us right back to the airport.

It all depends what your windows are in DBX. I was there for ~7 hours and in middle of night, so did not leave. But have spent a week in Dubai before and it is very safe. Just don't be a dumbass (no overt PDA, drinking outside of hotel bars, etc) and all will be good. They are generally helpful and friendly I found (about 8 years ago).

Emirates business lounge is also great at DBX (at least the one you'll likely go to -- my longer layover was at the massive one). Bring some clothes with you so shower before your next leg -- the bathrooms were pristine, so no worries there.
