List your top 5
Whether they wrote for themselves their band or for another artist
-Robert Smith
-Billy Corgin
-Stevie Nicks/Lindsey Buckingham/Christine
Mcvie
Gypsy written by Stevie
I remember loving this song when I was younger and watching Stevie dance in the rain in the video. Probably what started my love for Fleetwood Mac.
Fun Fact- It was the very first "World Premiere Video" on MTV in 1982.
-Isaac Brock
-Marcus Mumford
And so many more…

I hate Mumford and Sons.
My list would include JJ Cale, Elvis Costello, Willie Nelson, Joni Mitchell, Brian Wilson, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye (his songwriter ability allowed him to break away from the clutches of motown) and then you have the great combos of Lennon/McCarthy, Jagger/Richards, John/Taupin. Some more modern ones would be Britt Daniel (Spoon), Beck, PJ Harvey, Angel Olsen.

quote:then why ask for 5?
And so many more
How about instead of yet another list thread, give samples of their work?
Forever
It doesn't mean forever anymore
I said forever
But it doesn't look like I'm gonna be around much anymore
When the heat gets sub-tropical
And the talk gets sub-topical
Riot act, you can read me the riot act
You can make me a matter of fact
Or a villain in a million
A slip of the tongue is gonna keep me civilian
Why do you talk such stupid nonsense?
When my mind could rest much easier
Instead of all this dumb-dumb insolence
I would be happier with amnesia
They say forget her
Now it looks like you're either gonna be before me or against me
I got your letter
Now they say I don't care for the color that it paints me
Trying to be so bad is bad enough
Don't make me laugh by talking tough
Don't put your heart out on your sleeve
When your remarks are off the cuff
Riot act, you can read me the riot act
You can make me a matter of fact
Or a villain in a million
A slip of the tongue is gonna keep me civilian
Riot act...
- Elvis Costello
Reading these words naked on the page, shorn of the powers of the arrangement and Costello's voice, this may come across as doggerel. But I guess even the best lyrics are like that.

Maynard (Tool, APC, Puscifer) will always be my top
Andy Hull (Manchester Orchestra) is someone I've really honed in on lately.

Ronnie Van Zant - His songwriting was phenomenal. Most of the stuff he wrote about were real things going on in his life.
