"military -> GI bill -> go to PA school after he gets out of undergrad"

... Bingo. This is a great route to go. My son is a junior in college. He joined the Army National Guard and qualified for a $20,000 sign-on bonus when he was 18. He is a Combat Engineer and being deployed to Egypt in a few months.
He will receive active duty pay, and his GI Bill will go from paying about 75% of his college tuition to about 90% after his tour.

The military does more for a young man than just give him a trade. He will grow tf up and he will make life long friends. If it’s something he wants to do, encourage him to do his homework, and before he signs anything, make sure someone close to you that is familiar with the process is making sure he gets the most benefits possible.

I was a tanker. We look down on all other MOS as “speed bumps”, except Medics. Tankers respect medics.

My son is infantry. They look down on all other MOS as “pogs”, except medics. Grunts respect medics.

US Air Force Combat Control Team. One of the most interesting jobs in the military.

That’s true and the AF would be a good choice, but if he wants to be a medic, he would need to do Pararescue. Basically SF medics.

25 years on, I'm still very good friends with several of the dudes I served with. Even the larger core group of friends who worked together back in the day, still stay in touch. We were all trained in a technology field. Now? Most of us are VPs, Directors, one COO, and Principal Engineers at major companies. We've got a couple successful entrepreneurs, too. We didn't pay for school. Didn't pay for the experience. Had an incredibly fun time while serving, even when deployed. And it was Air Force, so not exactly like we were out marching at 5am or any stupid shite like that.

The military is no different than any other private or public enterprise. You get out of it what you put into it. You aren't always going to agree with leadership or the mission, but you have to appreciate the larger picture and the opportunities your service will provide in the future.

All that said, unless your son is gung ho about serving his country and willing to die for it, he should steer clear of Army and Marines, imo. There's a difference between those who serve in order to set themselves up for the future and those who are there to willingly kill or be killed. The Army, and especially the Marines, who certainly have my utmost respect, are different breeds of people. Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard are typically further removed from the front lines, aren't trained in the arts of TRUE warfare, and are treated more as 'employees' than as cannon fodder.

Air Force does live a better life than all the other branches. I remember when I enlisted in the Army. They took us all to Montgomery, AL for MEPS at Maxwell AF Base. Don’t matter what branch you joined, if you were from Alabama, that’s where you went for your physical, processing, and enlistment ceremony. While there they took us to the chow hall at Maxwell for noon chow. Holy shite was it nice! Imagine Golden Corral but the food is good, the staff is professional, and it’s actually clean and well kept. I remember thinking if this is how they feed you in the military, I’m going to like this.

Then they sent me to Fort Knox…

Cute, but there are several jobs that require actual men.

Me and my army buddies talk every single day. We all were in the same field and all of us have enjoyed a certain degree of success, with one a CEO of a 100m+ company.

All of us, with no exception are dummies and the army made us better people. I love my brothers and can’t imagine not having those relationships.

And they were all “planning on joining” or “almost joined” the Marines, or Special Forces, or Navy SEALs.

I had a friend that was this guy. Swore he was going to join and be a SEAL. Dude is nothing but a drunk and deadbeat dad and on the rare occasion I see him, he reminds me that he regrets not becoming a SEAL because becoming a SEAL is just a formality.

Yeah. I think we all know someone like that. I use to ride with a guy who’s dad was a Marine in Vietnam. He on the other hand was “almost” Marine Force Recon. Only thing he didn’t do was actually enlist.

I was in Navy Seabees, went to Iceland in October ‘69 after boot camp and A school.
First 90 days there I had to do mess cook duty(kp in Army)
I was lucky in that I got sent to the hospital to take care of patient meals.

I got to know one of the corpsman pretty well.He had 3 years in,he told me there were 121 in his class at corpsman school.120 were sent to Viet Nam,most to serve with Marines. At that time 65 of his classmates were dead.
65 young men’s lives not to mention the other 58,000 +were snuffed out in the prime of their lives for some bullshite war.The MIC benefitted to be sure.

If he’s dead set on joining Air Force only one I would recommend.

National Guard is not too great.I know a guy was in 10 years, served a year in Afghanistan and a year in Iraq and was booted out because he refused the fake vax.
So much for his service.Over 8,000 soldiers and sailors were kicked out for refusing the vax that neither prevented Covid or stopped it’s transmission. Now military offering to let them back in,only 43 have accepted.
That should tell you something.

Spent 22 years in the AF, watched it go downhill from 96 to 2018. It seems to be even worse now. Standards, discipline. And professionalism are all severely lacking.

Just curious to know what is the real percentage of veterans who serve, get out and then finish college. Tried googling but could only come up with 43% start college but no stats on how many actually graduated.

A friend of mine enlisted in the Army and was an airborne medic for a couple of years. From there he went into special forces for several years as a medic. Eventually made it to Delta as a medic. Upon leaving the military he furthered his education and from there opened urgent care centers. Recently he sold the urgent care properties to a private equity group and made serious bank.

???? I had the exact opposite experience. I got orders to deploy with the Army on a Joint Expeditionary Tasking (JET), supplementing Army medics. My pre deployment training was at Ft Sill. Imagine my horror as I was expecting a “dining facility” but instead we stayed in the field for chow. No steak and lobster for the Airmen?!? ????
