Has anyone tried Medium Rare, the steak and frites only place on Magazine St?

Its a restaurant that has 3 locations in the DC area and then inexplicably opened one here on Magazine near the whole foods (in the old Slice/Juan's space).
All they do for dinner is a 3 course prix fix for 29 bucks of bread, salad, steak and fries (they do have a portabello vegetarian option, and do a brunch menu and dessert as well). The brunch menu is various steak and breakfast items with all you can drink bloody/mimosas etc for 32.
That's it. Looks like a really good deal to be honest, and the place looks nice. I can't imagine its steakhouse quality, but just wondering if anyone has gone.

Sounds like they are following the Charlie's model. I'm curious if they are as good. I personally would have a difficult time bringing myself to a DC chain in NOLA when I could support a local establishment instead.

I think Charlie's tries to be more of a steakhouse than them.

Admittedly it's been years since I've been to Charlie's, and I've heard it's not the same since it was bought out.

I'd go just for that.

A lot of places are charging 25 just for the bottomless option without anything else.

Charlie's is dog shite. They are just as expensive now as Mr Johns or Doris and the food is two letter grades worse and the place looks like a Elks Lodge.
I've never understood people's infatuation with that place. So many better options at that price point.

I don’t believe this.

Honestly not a bad deal. But my main hangup is this:

Aaron Burgau jacked up pricing when he bought it. Don't have to believe me, go for yourself douche.

What does Charlie’s charge for a ribeye? Doris is $68 for 16oz. I’m sure it’s better quality than Charlie’s, but I am also sure Charlie’s isn’t charging $68 for a 16oz ribeye.
Edit: and Mr John’s is $54 but they do not give a weight on their website.

Tonight I checked out Medium Rare, located on Magazine by Whole Foods. It’s bread, salad, steak & fries for $30. They bring seconds of steak & fries. If you’re into steakhouses this might not be for you but if you want a steak dinner and a casual night out, this is it.

Terrible doesn't even begin to describe it.
Best compliment I can give, it isn't that expensive.

This is wrong. I've had two incredible meals there in the last month.
It's a neighborhood restaurant, I'm not sure why you're expecting it to be Doris or Mr John's.
The price of prime beef is high these days, again, I'm not sure why you're expecting it to be at a discount.
The service and the food are both very good.

Considering it's on its third ownership now, this can certainly be expected. I don't know as I have not been since pre Katrina when the original owner was still running it. I have heard similar from others though, so it does appear to be a mixed bag of reviews.

Because once upon a time it was a great steak restaurant without any of the frills of the glamourous steakhouses everywhere that served good steaks at good prices. I think people still hold on to the past and what it was, since it is a NOLA staple. If the prices are indeed the same as MrJ and Doris, then it probably isn't worth it IMO. Their prices are not indicative of just the cost of beef but also of the environment of the dining experiences there.

That steak looks like shite. There are better steaks at a steak night at bars in Nola.
