Book deals are part of the grift. The publishing houses give them massive advances on a book. The book magically winds up on the NYT bestseller list without selling 100 copies, and large retailers order enough to make the publisher whole. The Obamas did something similar with Netflix. $50 million for some sparse and lackluster content.
