Regarding Linebackers, can someone explain each of these and what their primary responsibilities are please? I'm old school and used to names such as Middle Linebacker.

JACK, WILL, MIKE and SAM

Jack is a mix between edge and linebacker

Will (weak side)
Mike (middle)
Sam (strong side)

Will = Weakside, Mike = Middle, Sam = Strong, and Jack is an edge guy who can also break off in coverage, so pretty much an undersized DE who can get pressure and primarily blitzes in a 3-4.

The elementary understanding of Defensive scheme is what makes this board hilarious when they criticize coaches that make 100's of k's/ millions a year.

Tiger Attorney, perhaps you can take a few minutes to go into greater detail regarding the linebackers. I would imagine we all would like to learn more, so please give us your insight. Seriously.

All depends on the play....the terms Mike, Will, Sam, and Jack are where they line up pending on which side the TE is on. Sometimes LBs need to fill gap, some plays drop back in zone/man coverage, qb spy, or blitz. All about quickly diagnosing the play

Mike- The general of the tackle box. Responsible for relaying calls to other LBs and DL. Responsible for everything from B Gap to B Gap. Your most physical backers. MLB

Sam- Strong side LB. Aligns to the strength of the offense...usually covers TE's and backs out the backfield. Next to the Mike, these guys are your most physical LBs. SLB

Will- Weak side LB. Aligns away from the strength call. More of a coverage LB that can handle space. Your most athletic LB. WLB

Jack- A pass rusher. Can also be a flats defender if they need one. JLB

Is there an argument for putting your most athletic guy at Sam to cover backs and tight ends?

This is the best explanation I've heard, coming from Lawrence Taylor and one of his guests at a football camp. LINK

The sayings that really make me laugh are when people say ‘I looked at the film’ or when people talk about QBs ‘reading defenses’ or anything like that. People have no clue what the quarterback is supposed to be looking at or ‘reading’ pre and post snap, yet that doesn’t stop them from spouting off their extremely ignorant opinions
