Jackson will close 16 schools for declining enrollment.

JPS is finally biting the bullet and closing down 16 schools after years of declining enrollment.

Superintendent Dr. Eric Greene said enrollment declined from 27,627 students in the 2015-2016 school year to 17,753 students this year., a loss of 9,514 students. However, the losses are even steeper when considering earlier years.
JPS lost nearly half of its student population since 2007 when the student population was 31,191, a loss of 13,438 students (43%).

As JPS enrollment plummets, it continues to operate 59 buildings. Rankin County Public Schools operate only 28 buildings with an enrollment of more than 18,000 students.

Jeeeeeebus!

On the plus side, that fleeing population is why traffic on the interstates in Jackson doesn't often come to repeated dead stop, even during the 5pm rush hour (at least when taking 55 through the area).

I wonder if closing schools will give Jackson enough teachers. I can’t imagine people wanting to teach there if they have choices.

Maybe the homeless will move into the closed schools.

"Will the last person to move out of Jackson please turn out the lights?"

My old high school, Wingfield, is on the chopping block. Saw a post on FB from a current teacher who said the enrollment has dropped to 500. She also said part of their issue is that the school system no longer enforces residency requirements and students are attending schools outside of their areas.

It will be very interesting to see what JPS does with these properties, once they are vacant. Wingfield is a large campus.

Is there a corresponding cut in spending?

That isn’t “good fiscal choice” as much as reality cock-slapping them in the face.

I thought about that as well. Will they be cutting teachers, aides, bus drivers and janitorial/maintenance staff as well or will they absorb them into the remaining schools (thus, ideally, making those places better by lessening the burden on the existing staff)?

Is there a single public high school in Jackson that is at least worthy of consideration for your child?

Not in Jackson proper. Murrah is the best option. They are a 7A school in my daughter's school's athletic district. It's amazing to walk in that school and see where it was named as one of the best schools in the nation in the 50s and 60s.

Murrah is the "gun to the head-you have to pick one" option, but no one is voluntarily doing it.

Won’t this overload the current schools student:teacher ratio?

Hopefully they are wise cuts and spending can also be trimmed.
