Always defer is my opinion

Receive so we aren’t chasing the lead the entire game

Defer so lsu gets the 2 for one as we did the last two games.

Punt… defense needs confidence.

I'm in the always defer crowd. It gives you a chance to observe the game, make adjustments then come out from the half with the ball.

The real question is, do we choose heads or tails?

I am definitely in the always defer crowd. That said, if you were ever going to take the ball first, this team would be the one to do it with. Let your offense go out there first and set the tone for the game instead of your defense, which is going to get manhandled.

I agree. Kelly has (contrary to popular belief) elected to receive the opening kickoff 3 times since he’s been here - 2022 FSU, 2022 Mississippi State, and 2022 Tennessee.
I’m not sure what drove that decision against FSU but I can see the thought process for Mississippi State and Tennessee. Against Mississippi State you might have been able to break their spirit with an immediate TD. Against Tennessee it was just about staying in the game - ideally you score on the opening drive to prevent playing from behind, keep the players’ (and fans’) confidence up, etc.
It obviously failed spectacularly since we muffed the opening kickoff, but I understand why he did it against that Tennessee offense.
This Missouri team probably falls somewhere between those two examples. Despite their output, I don’t think that offense is going to look like 2022 Tennessee once the dust settles. I could be wrong. But our defense is so bad, it doesn’t matter.
I would defer but agree that if you’re going to receive, this is probably the game to do it.

LSU deferred two weeks in a row, and got a twofer around the break both times. Given the Tigers' usual slow starts, defer is a no-brainer.
Maybe if we lose the toss and the other team defers, can we decide to kick off, rather than receive?

With a lousy defense, you take the ball if you can to let the offense set the tone.

LSU always screws up its first drive on offense, so... defer is the only sensible option

Receive to keep the defense off the field.

I usually argue to defer 20 times out of 10, but given our defense these days.........

Defer would be my choice if we had a better than average defense. We do not have even have an average defense. Take the ball and get ahead to relieve a little pressure on the defense when they take the field. Also to take the crowd out of it a little. Get a stop and we go up by 2 scores early in the first.

quote:That works on either the front end or the tail end. And it makes more sense to do it on the tail end (to start the 2nd half). Same mindset, just at a more crucial time and closer to the end rather than to start the game.
Receive to keep the defense off the field.

Why would we defer?!

Just a hypothetical here:
What happens if the Tigers win the toss, don't defer, but willingly choose to start on defense and kick off, believing their early game offense is flawed? What happens to start off the second half?

Receive. Hopefully the offense can build a 14 point lead by halftime, so when Missouri scores immediately after halftime, LSU can have a 7 point lead to try and keep.
