Friend,
I do not know much about Highlands, but in Asheville, not visit is complete without dinner on the terrace as the Grove Park Inn, which has arguably the best two fire places of any resort in America, perfect to rock near while sipping hot chocolate. The food at Biltmore is just average except in The Dining Room at the Inn, which is a lovely place to stay.
The best pizza in eastern NC is from Fresh Wood Fired Pizza and Pasta in Black Mountain. The Original Vennie’s has the best Italian in Asheville and is not too far from The Grove Park Inn.
If you like cheese and plan it correctly, try Blue Ridge Mountain Creamery. I have not tried the Looking Glass Creamery since they moved, but have enjoyed many great cheese boards at the old location.
The food scene as a whole in Asheville is good, but a bit overrated.

People will say eat at Curate in Asheville, which is accurate. But you also need to get drinks at Sovereign Remedies.

Curate in Asheville and her bodega around the corner.
In Highlands, gotta be honest the food is not gonna be great (depends where you are from). Solid continental fare but nothing to write home about. Rather hit up the roadside markets and cook at home.
Skyline lodge is a good spot. Food hit or miss but gorgeous property. Cashiers Farmer’s Market rocks. Get the blueberry pie. Whiteside brewing.

Highlands area, no doubt about it, Mountain Fresh Grocery. It has a four star deli. Also get a pound of their Red Rooster full city blend coffee. The best coffee I've ever had.

Make reservations weeks in advance for Curate. The Bull and Beggar is another good one to book ahead.
White Duck Taco Shop is a creative and quality spot for a lunch.
We hit many breweries, and the pizza at Asheville Brewing Company downtown-south slope was excellent. We just wanted a mid-afternoon snack so ordered a slice with low expectations; I've been wanting another one ever since.
12 Bones Smokehouse down on the river is good BBQ with Cheer Wine (even diet) on the fountain choices. There is usually a line, but it moves fast.

Line was too long for us. We ended up going to Buxton Hall which was very good Carolina style bbq.

When in Highlands, drive to Franklin and see all the waterfalls on the way. When you get to Franklin, find the Hot Spot gas station in the middle of town. In that gas station is Caffe REL. Don’t look it up, don’t research it. Just don’t go on a Sunday or Monday because they are closed. Go into that gas station cafe with no expectations and report back.

Highlands:
Mountain Fresh
Madison's at the Old Edwards Inn if the weather is good. Nice garden to sit outside.
Blue Bike has good breakfast
The Oak Steakhouse at the Skyline Lodge is a very good steak house.
Restaurant Paoletti - caveat - I've never eaten here because I've never been able to get a reservation - it's always booked solid.
Because you might drive from Highlands to Asheville through Cashiers.
Old Orchard is my personal favorite restaurant in Cashiers
Canyon Kitchen is another good restaurant that is damn near impossible to get reservations. They close after the "season' so depends on when you will be there.
The Library in Sapphire is another good place.
Greystone Inn on Lake Toxaway is also good.

If you get a chance, get a burger at Farm Burger downtown - and then get a good beer at One World Brewing in the basement of that building.

Does anybody know the pub in highlands that John bell (WSP) goes to?

Breweries to hit:
Burial Bewery - Best beers in AVL.
Wicked weed (has awesome food btw, I eat there a lot, not just your average brewery, it’s large and possibly one of the better restaurants in the general area)
I second 12 bones but Luella’s is better. Will be a line, go a bit early.

For those that have eaten at the Sunset Terrace when it was cool / cold... what is that like? Is the Vue a decent alternative if it is cold?
Thanks for the responses. Very helpful.

Friend,
If the weather is very cold they will close the outdoor section. The coldest I remember it was while we have eaten there was probably the mid to upper 40s in November. They had heaters and brought us blankets, which were not Pendleton, so I was unimpressed by their construction, though, their composition was woolen. It was not windy, and we had a lovely evening followed by an hour sipping on hot drinking chocolate rocking in front of one of the fire places inside.
Asheville does not get that cold, but the Grove Park is not going to have diners outside getting frost bite. If it is open, you should have a good time. And if it is not open, Vue is a wholly acceptable alternative and the food at Vue is better than at the Terrace. The experience is not as good, but I would rather eat at the Vue than any of the trendy spots in Asheville simply due to the Inn’s elegance. The Grove Park Inn is one of America’s best resorts and time spent there, whether sleeping, eating, rocking in the lobby, admiring the gingerbread houses, or watching the sunset on the Terrace, is time well spent.

I’ve been there a bunch, never gotten a pie. Decided to get one tonight, I’ve missed out on so much lol. Great recommendation. Now I’m kinda curious about the $70 Caroline’s cakes Caramel cake. Saw a couple people buying it.
They had some out of this world blackberries tonight too.

Great spot. It was near our hotel, so we went a few times. They had live music every night when we were there. Monday was open mic night and featured some good emtertainment.
