It’s just easier for you to believe what you want to believe when you characterize everybody who doesn’t think like you as the exact same, ie: the worst goddam person ever.
That way you never have to approach anything with a shred of nuance. It’s a perfect setup if you’ve got no problem with being blissfully ignorant.

Well that’s just terrible. The victim should be able to pick the punishment. And this case the guy more than likely wanted community service and a taxpayer funded residence so this guy can try to get back on his feet.

I would imagine even still, if she knew you carried a gun for self defense, she’d call you an idiot and a whole host of other names.
I had a coworker that I respected share very similar views with me. I told her “I hope you live your entire life and finish out your days with the exact same views you have right now”. She said “why”? I said “because it is going to take something catastrophic to break your world view and I hope that nothing bad ever happens to you”.
