Besides wine tours and shopping?

My wife wants to plan a trip for our anniversary. I know there are a ton of shops and wine tours in the area but I wonder if 4 nights would be too long? My wife isn't a big shopper so that really wouldn't take up any of our time. I'm just not sure what else there is in the area.

The biggest attraction for me is the Museum of the Pacific War - aka the Admiral Nimitz Museum. I plan a days visit there every time we go to Fredericksburg.

Also, a couple of nice restaurants. Try Otto's German Bistro.

Absolutely.

3 nights max. Honestly if driving from Louisiana, 2 nights then a day/night in Gruene on your way back east.

Do you hunt? I can do a few hours on main street drinking while my wife looks at the junk. that's about it.

we went with some couples and the guys hunted while the girls shopped and drank nasty hill country wine.

as stated, the Nimitz Museum is great. If you like driving and seeing, it's a great home base. Town of Mason, Comfort, Enchanted Rock, Pedernales Falls, lots of places to just drive and enjoy the scenery if you are tired of shopping and drinking. I enjoy making the drive out to Garvin's Store for jerky (and their selection of knives, num-chuks, throwing stars, and tasers) and looping down TX 41 and TX 39. There are lots of nice ranches out there with exotics roaming around and the headwaters of the Guadalupe. Lots of places to just not get in a hurry and enjoy a cold beer, or glass of wine.

Did this trip about 2 months ago.....full disclosure, my wife and I are not wine drinkers so the tours weren't on our agenda. We struggled to find things to do after the first day of walking up and down the main drag through the shops. We hiked Enchanted twice (actually on the same day....early morning and late evening for the sunset....which was the highlight of the trip). The entire town shuts down around 9 so there's not much in the way of night life

I guess if you enjoy wine it would be a much more enjoyable trip since there are many vineyards to choose from (many of which are impressive). Just not my vibe.

I wanted to check out the museum, on our last day but it closed at 4:00. What I did get to see was impressive....wished I had spent more time there rather than the main drag in the souvenir shops.

Hope this helps

I take Fredricksburg as not a do do do thing. The wine tours for two days or so is great. Do the hop on hop off bus one day. Do further out wineries another day.

The LBJ ranch is really cool. Not a fan of the man himself but the ranch is neat.

If you don't enjoy going to wineries I can't imagine even going to Fredricksburg, unless you are going out there for Oktoberfest or the Christmas stuff.

Just being AT a winery without even liking wine is wonderful, to me.

I will definitely have to check this out. Right up my alley.

Do you hunt?

I did when I was younger. I fell out of it while I was stationed in Florida and just haven't picked it back up since except for the occasional duck hunt with buddies. I never did get into deer hunting though. My dad spoiled me with a very active duck lease when I was young so when he tried to bring me deer hunting, the thought of sitting in a stand and not seeing a single thing for hunts at a time didn't sit well with me.

I wouldn't call us wine people by any means but I can appreciate a good wine tour.

I imagine we will spend part of 1 day walking Main St. just to have a look around. I figure 1 day of wine tours. Now that I know about the museum, that should take part of another day and add in a little bit of hiking should get me to about 2 1/2 days.

Maybe we will cut it to 3 days, come home a day early, and just not tell anyone.

Luckenbach Texas is 15 minutes away and should be a place you hang out for an afternoon or evening. They have live music every day - each afternoon for pickers and more headliners on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Put on your boots and dance with your wife in one of the coolest venues in the state.

We did a Monday - Friday last year and it's pretty dead during the first part of the week. I would plan to do a Thursday - Monday or Sunday. A lot of the wineries and shops were closed on Monday and Tuesday.

The hop on hop off bus (which is a GREAT option) only runs on Saturday (and possibly Friday).

Otherwise you'd have to book transport.

We found out the hard way that Uber is unreliable in Fredericksburg.

Another good restaurant I don't believe anyone else has recommended is Hill Top Cafe located a little outside of Fredericksburg, but well worth the short drive.

You could even argue 1 night max.

To each their own.

Hike Enchanted Rock and Pedernales Falls SP

Watch the bats emerge at Old Tunnel SP (depending on what time of year you are there), there is also a short hiking trail there and Alamo Springs Cafe which has very good burgers.

Comfort is a nice little town with lots of old buildings still in use. There are all sorts of shops but I usually just hit Highs Cafe for lunch, crab cakes are good, or Comfort Pizza (order your dough the day before or they may sell out). There is also a distillery there that has a prickly pear spirit but it has limited hours now and is going out of business. There is a winery next door to the distillery that is still open. To get to comfort, you can take Hwy 87 but a nicer drive is to head east out of Fred on 290 (towards Luckenbach) and turn right (south) on Old San Antonio road (towards Old Tunnel SP). Follow that road all the way to Comfort. It will be very narrow and twisty for about 10 miles and then open up a bit at the Sisterdale turnoff. Sisterdale has a little winery and a BBQ joint. There are a bunch of nice drives in the area I can tell you about if interested or just google scenic drives from Fred.

Garrison Bros Distillery is worth a visit. Their whiskey is ok but its on a nice piece of property.

Luckenbach is ok, its pretty cheesy, almost amusement park like, but if there is a band playing it can be fun.

Also, many things are closed Mon, Tues and Wed so the weekends are better. I'll be out there for the eclipse in a couple of weeks on a Saturday and am hoping to hit some places that are always closed when we are there in the first part of the week, which has been the case the last few times we have been there.
