Hair Loss for 18-year-old

My autistic son, who has enough damned issues already, is also now thinning significantly on top. My wife has asked me to investigate actual effective treatments.
She's been using a DHT Blocker, but it doesn't really seem to be accomplishing much. What's the latest and greatest for hair loss (bonus point if it isn't prohibitively expensive).

Finasteride 1mg daily
Minoxidil 1.25mg
Or topical Rogaine (also Minoxidil)

Derma rolling is also rumored to help. It's basically a roller with tiny needles on it that prick the skin so blood comes to the surface. Painless.

Not trying to be an ahole. Just get a nice pair of clippers and start buzzing it. Will make the next 10 years less painful and cheaper for everyone.

I lost my hair at like 21-22. I know exactly how much it fricking sucks man but...
The best treatment is shaving it off, no guard clippers style, and being confident about it. If he can grow facial hair, thatll help. Get to the gym, lots of cool bald action star celebrities walking around. Most of those treatments are hormonal or have major side effects, or both. Dudes walking around with limp dicks because of rogain.
The worst thing to do is to comb it over, grow a horseshoe, or otherwise pretend its not happening. I know dudes my age that still do this and they look silly.

I’d find a functional medicine doctor to check for deficiencies. Have to get to the root cause.

23 here.
I tried the daily Rogaine and it helped for a bit, but I couldn't afford it for long. So I tried to hang on to what I had for the longest time and when Covid hit and getting haircuts were outlawed, I started buzzing it and haven't looked back. Saves so much headache.

yall are a bunch of lucky bastards....mine started in 7th grade lol. by 25 essentially had to just shave the damn thing. HS was fine but was developing major widows peak and top was looking thin. I can specifically remember every day after football having like hundred hairs in my helmet and my coach, who was my 2nd cousin, making fun of me saying i would look just like him by 25.....he was right. still an a-hole though

Started balding at 23. Tried a few things but nothing at the time worked. I would definitely shave it if I didn't have a square block of a head. To be honest I don't think about it much anymore but it's the biggest ego killer I have.

I knew I was going bald when I got back from the beach during med school and I felt a sunburn on my head. I knew it was downhill from there.
I used to have the long hair and flippy bangs. People don't recognize me when I show them old pictures

For those telling him to shave it:
I hear you. I've been shaving my dome since I was 30. My brothers both went bald in high school as well (though they went the skullet and ballcap route to cope, it being Arkansas in the 80s, and didn't start shaving their heads until much later in life).
That being said, due to his genetic condition (which also might tie into his hair loss..he's got all kinds of weird shite going on along with his autism due to it), he has low-set ears and kind of a funny-shaped head. He's always worn his hair somewhat long to cover this.
All that being said: this is mainly on me and his mom. He's kind of unconcerned with his looks for the most part (though he doesn't like the thought of getting bald), but we're trying to give him every advantage he can (since he's been dealt a tough hand) as he transitions out of high school and into the next phase.
Anyway, thanks for the advice. I know none of it is going to "solve" the issue short of just embracing it... but this is more about his current stage in life and trying to transition him into adulthood with "normlal" relationships and such. Probably his mom and I overcompensating as we stress about his prognosis for an independent adulthood, but would like to help out hwoever we can.

With all that said, if you are looking for some medications, I would go with Rogaine first.
It is very safe and easy.
Hope it helps.

I started noticing mine at 18 as well. I've done it all. I had a bad experience with oral finasteride and got off of it after finally having enough. I now use Hims topical spray. Is it working? I will say yes but it more so is prolonging the inevitable. Ill ride it out until I am ready then shave it.

Solid bro. Goodluck man, it's tough for a young man to go bald early, especially one thats already disadvantaged. There is no "love yourself" movement for young men.
Another bald bro life hack. A bad arse hat collection. Basball caps, newsboy caps, beanies, you name it. This is assuming he would wear one, I know some autistic people have sensory issues.
Maybe not fedoras.

The double whammy is fighting hair loss, getting Covid, and then an aftereffect of Covid causes thinning hair.

Finasteride. Don’t believe the Reddit posts on side effects. It regrew my hair at 40 after I had the bozo the clown look. Not lying.

The rollers are proven to work pretty well according to the latest studies. Combine it with the other stuff listed above for the best results.

I teach autistic kids and have for a long time. I've been through this with students. Also, I'm a fellow baldy.
1) Medication can screw these kids up big time. I wouldn't give him anything that's not 100% necessary for life function.
2) As you stated, he doesn't seem to care. Don't fight it.
3) Hair loss treatments are expensive and require a level of diligence that I doubt he will be able or want to keep up.
4) Most hair loss treatment only delay the inevitable.
I know none of what I said may be what you want to hear, but it is what I know to be true. Get him a good electronic head shaver and make that part of his daily routine. Also, get a lotion with sunscreen or find hats he likes and will wear.
