I’m not a Braves fan, but that’s the truth about the area. Now if the Braves were in the midst of a decade long playoff drought, an expansion may have a chance.
Nashville is a complete transplant city at this point. An expansion could work there.

I don't dispute the current situation and the run they're on is a big part of it. I'm just of the opinion that 20 years down the road, that won't matter, and kids who grew up with the expansion team will be fans of the local team.

Couldn’t Braves ownership block a team in Charlotte? NC is a huge part of their viewership. Can’t imagine they’d let that happen.

The stadium itself is definitely an issue, but isn't the main issue. There is a reason the Lightning have some of the best attendance in the NHL while the Rays have some of the worst, and it's not because Tampa is a hockey town but hates baseball. The difference is the Lightning play in Tampa.
The majority of the population lives on the Hillsborough side. The majority of companies (i.e. most season ticket holders) are located in Tampa. From where I live in the suburbs of Tampa, it's an hour plus commute each way. Committing 2-3 hours (depending on traffic) of travel on a weekday night is a lot. Hell, it only takes me 2 hours to get to Gainesville, and it's 130 miles away.
Unfortunately, this new stadium would not solve the main problem.

I'm sure that's part of all this. I thought I remember reading that the Giants used something like that to block the A's from moving to San Jose. I'm not sure if the rights the individual teams have matches the blackout map, but Reds/Braves/Orioles/Nats are all blacked out in Charotte.
Maybe they all have some sort of part in whether or not Charlotte could get a team?

It isn't necessarily being on the peninsula that is the problem. It is that anything south of the stadium requires a trek across the 275 sunshine skyway bridge and that will create a 1.5-hour drive for anyone coming from the south.
Also, the location makes it difficult for anyone coming from Lakeland or East of Tampa. They would get much better attendance if the stadium were more accessible to residents of the Tampa burbs.

They only get one vote. They would have to lobby other owners hard... but you could say that Portland would eat into the Mariners' fan base and SLC would eat into the Rockies' fan base as well. Neither of those teams have a fan base as large as the Braves, so pretty easy to argue that it would hurt them more.
People say the same thing about Houston/Arlington blocking a team in San Antonio, but still that's just two votes.

Being a transplant city isn’t a great argument for starting a new team there. Those transplants are fans of team from where they came. Go to a Titans game against any team with a reasonable following and they fill up 1/3 of the stadium.

Las Vegas and now St Pete. Both building billion dollar stadiums that only hold 30,000 fans. I guess this is the trend.

Outside of the mega cities, why does any team build a 40,000 seat stadium? Because of Saturdays and Sundays? It’s depressing watching a game Monday-Thursday and seeing so many empty seats.

With crazy high cost of attendance and crystal clear 65" TVs, smaller stadiums are probably smart.
The teams don't want 5000 more people in the cheap seats, they want 500 more people in suites and premium seating.

The location makes it tougher for someone from Lakeland, but it is an easier drive from the south. Going across the Skyway from Sarasota/Bradenton is an easier commute than downtown Tampa, especially on weekdays.

IDK if the location is half the problem. It does seem to be a factor however. It's a pain to get to for many Hillsborough Co residents on a daily basis, which is important for baseball.
It's not like football which only has games roughly 8 times a year. Making that trek 10x times is tough.
St pete is a cool town. Tropicana is a major POS stadium.Location could be a factor, but a new, nice stadium might help.
