This should put MLB expansion on deck with the A’s settled on Las Vegas.

The construction of the 30,000-seat domed stadium, which is set to open in 2028 and is estimated to cost over $1.2 billion, figures to end speculation about the Rays relocating to another city.

Half of the problem with the current park is the location, so they decided to build a nicer park in the same location. Makes sense.

Yankees & Red Sox fans will still be packing the house

Does a team with almost no fans really need a new stadium?
There’s literally nothing wrong with the stadium they play in, aside from it being ugly.
Easy parking, plenty available seats, and it feels like walking into Heaven when you get inside in the AC.

I guess that hurts for the expansion cities (Vegas, Portland, Nashville, Charlotte)?

Your sports takes for "SportsGuy" are always hilarious.
Its generally considered one of the 2-3 worst stadiums in MLB along with Oakland.
It is an awful dump.

Vegas has a team. This clears the way for MLB to start considering expansion. I would think Nashville is a lock, with Salt Lake, Portland, Charlotte the other contenders. Salt Lake seems like a strong favorite for the second team

What is wrong with the location?

The location of the old stadium is horrific. Very difficult to get to, in a horrid location with a lot of traffic to get there. Its universally hated from my understanding.

I prefer it in St. Pete. I think the location within the site is bad because it doesn't take advantage of all that has happened in the city. St. Pete is a ton of fun, if they just move this to the northeastern portion of the site, you could have something really great.
I get the Tampa arguments, but this can work in St. Pete if done right.

It's not the location. It's the fans. The Marlins new stadium was going to fix everything too. Bad location, open air in the Florida summers. They're competing this year and attendance is 14,000 a game.

Rays owner Stuart Sternberg told the Tampa Bay Times earlier this month that the organization expected to "pay for half or more" of the cost for the stadium. The remainder of the cost will be contributed by the city of St. Petersburg and Pinellas County.
Congratulations to the taxpayers for footing the potential (even more when it is said and done) $600 million. I guarantee you the City probably ends up paying for over 80% of the stadium.
Another fleece job by an American owner

Nashville is indeed a lock.

From what I understand, it's at the end of a peninsula so to get there most people have to go all the way around the bay to get there.

quote:It’s impossible to get consistent attendance from fans in central Florida. Those folks would have a much easier time getting to and from games if the stadium was across the bay. But as is, traffic to get to the trop after work is just ridiculous.
What is wrong with the location?
It’s nice that I can walk to games but I’d gladly sacrifice that for good attendance.

I had people on here trying to tell me that St. Pete is beautiful and location isn't the problem.
I've been to a series there before. St. Pete is definitely cool but no one is going to want to make that trek after work.
It felt like driving from New Orleans deep into the northshore. If I lived in Tampa, I'd very rarely go to games so I can see why that's what happens with the locals.

Vegas is getting its team and Nashville seems like a lock either way
This hurts the other cities as it takes away an option
Probably down to SLC, Charlotte, and Portland for the 2nd team

It won’t be Charlotte. That Braves already have generational fandom locked up in that area. No one is ditching the Braves for a startup.
