NO GOOD DEED GOES UNPUNISHED: Elon Musk is the latest scapegoat for Ukraine’s failing counteroffensive. (David Sacks)

quote:

Appearing at the @allinsummit yesterday, @elonmusk addressed the controversy that erupted over the past week when an excerpt from @WalterIsaacson's new biography of him was released.

The excerpt alleged that Elon turned off Starlink access to Crimea in order to prevent a Ukrainian drone attack on the Russian fleet based at Sevastopol last year. Elon has clarified (and Isaacson has acknowledged) that he didn’t turn off anything. Starlink had never been activated over Crimea because of U.S. sanctions on Russia. Ukrainian officials asked Elon in a late-night call to activate it for purposes of launching a highly provocative attack on the Russian fleet. Concerned such an attack would prompt an escalatory response — perhaps even a nuclear one — from the Russians, Elon refused the request. He told us at the All-In Summit that had the request come from the White House, he would have honored it.

For this, Elon has been called “evil” by a high-level Ukrainian official, and treasonous by the usual warmongers here at home. The military blog 1945 questioned whether he was “fit to run SpaceX” and whether the company needed to be nationalized. MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow claimed Elon was “intervening to try to stop Ukraine from winning the war.” CNN’s Jake Tapper called Elon a “capricious billionaire” who “effectively sabotaged a military operation by Ukraine, a U.S. ally.” He demanded to know of his interview subject, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, if there should be “repercussions” for Elon’s actions.

Tapper’s tirade echoed almost verbatim a cranky tweetstorm by neocon attack dog David Frum, who demanded Elon be investigated and stripped of his government contracts. According to Frum, Elon “confessed” to an “abuse of power” that “thwarted what might have been a decisive military operation to shorten the Russian war against Ukraine, (and) save who knows how many lives.” In Frum’s fantasy narrative, Russia would have responded to the drone attack by turning tail and leaving Ukraine, rather than massively escalating the war.

Aren't these the same people who said if you don’t like Twitter, start your own social net work company?

They should start their own satellite. Internet company.

If he had turned it on and shite went south, our government would have hung him out to dry and would probably have control of his companies, at least StarLink, by now.

He deals with them all the time, he knows how they are.

I hope they don't.
Then they could beam down unfettered propaganda and programming updates to their legions of NPC drones.

Wow! That's refreshing, Elon Musk puts his concern for humanity ahead of their demands. As opposed to those warmongering, treacherous, treaty ignoring, lying, sodomy-pushing creeps hunkered down in the Pentagon and the Oval Office.

They're intent on starting a nuclear confrontation with Russia and as long as they're in power in that Oval Office they will not stop.

The Founding Fathers must be turning over in their graves.

Apparently Starlink is building a version for our military that they will have 100% control over. Not really sure what to think about that yet and if there are any laws/regs put around it yet.

Access to Starlink in the territory near Crimea was "turned off" because the US has sanctions against Russia, Musk said. Starlink is not allowed to turn access on in Crimea without government approval, he said.

"If I got a request from the president type of thing — from the American president, to be clear — then I would have turned it on," Musk said about the use of Starlink in Crimea. "No such request came through."

So it was Joey B that pussed out. I misjudged Elon in this thread while everyone else misjudged Biden. I can live with that.

There was no secret order from Elon. There was a secret order from Elon. Make up your mind, Isaacson.

Elon saved Russian ships that ended up bombing civilians. That's a good deed? This bought time for Russia to build defenses and lay more mines, leading to the deaths of thousands? Good deed, Elon.

Elon is helping a country led by a Communist dictator to continue to commit a white genocide in Ukraine.

The author walked it back, I saw his interview. Elon didn’t turn it off, it was already geofenced prior to this and Elon had only set it up in Ukraine proper, leaving out Crimea. The Author has apologized for getting it wrong

What year is it GIF.

To quote many hypocrites here, y'all know who you are, "you want a Starlink, create your own".

This is 2023. Hell, Nazi missiles could get near target in England in WW2. If Starlink was not available, could not they have used Google or some weather satellite data.

This whole controversy seems pretty damned fishy.

I can get coordinates to this site using Google Earth. I would bet there is another satellite system that could those coordinates to Sevastopol to guide their drones.

Don't be so sinple minded. Starlink wasn't the only option.
