I hate to be the one to defend China, but the Russians waited until the Chinese were bogged-down in the Opium Wars and seized Outer Manchuria at gunpoint knowing that China couldn't open another front.

This is why Russia invaded Ukraine. They sit on more natural resources than they can defend, so they're trying to get the geographic blocking positions while they still have enough young men to do it. For those unaware, the bottom fell out of the Russian birth rate after the Cold War and they're running out of young people. Also, as they weaken, expect Turkey, possibly Kazakhstan, China, and Japan to move on their indefensible territory. Japan has oil and gas needs and will probably take Sakhalin Island back to get them.
