Arizona State informed the NCAA and Pac-12 that it will self-impose a bowl ban for the 2023 season due to alleged violations of NCAA rules that occurred within the program under ex-Sun Devils Herm Edwards, sources confirmed to CBS Sports' Dennis Dodd. ASU players were informed of the decision in a team meeting. ASU remains under investigation by the NCAA for the alleged violations as the program enters its first season under coach Kenny Dillingham.

Under Edwards, ASU allegedly hosted recruits in Tempe, Arizona, during the extended dead period that resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic. It was reported that at least 30 players visited ASU's campus during that dead period. Multiple assistants under Edwards departed the program in the time since the investigation before Edwards himself ultimately left.

Arizona State athletic director Ray Anderson told Action Network that the school will not be further commenting on the matter "in light of the ongoing investigation and our membership obligation to maintain the confidentiality of the matter." Arizona State president Michael Crow previously expressed frustration with the slow pace of the investigation, claiming to The Athletic in June 2021 that the "NCAA is moving in deliberate fashion."

How does the AD still have a job?

I’m sure the team is devastated they might miss out on the Cheez-It Bowl

Would be funny if they went 12-0 and won the PAC 12 Championship

the Cheeze_It Bowl is in Orlando, which would be a major improvement to the only Bowl game Herm Edwards ever won. The Sun Bowl in lovely El Paso.

The disaster that was the Herm Edwards hire is now complete.

I remember some people talking about his hire as if it was some revolutionary approach, as if the “famous personality as figurehead CEO coach” bullshite would ever work. Say what you want about Deion, but he’s actually recruiting and focused on Colorado football.

Herm couldn’t even pass his recruiting test when he was hired, and was still doing weekly NFL hits for ESPN well into his tenure when he should’ve been coaching ASU.

Not so fast.

ASU is trying to get out in front of some of the harsher punishments hanging over the program by self-imposing a bowl ban. The NCAA rarely issues bowl bans anymore. It punishes bowls, TV partners, fans, and the conference as much as the targeted school. It used to be a common punishment, but now it’s only used in selective circumstances.

ASU was going to struggle to qualify for a bowl this season, and they have a new coaching staff. They are willing to write off this season in hopes that upcoming NCAA sanctions are lessened, so they don’t cripple the program for multiple years.

This punishment is literally because Herm and his staff wouldn't stop recruiting.

Amazing how narratives are spun to fit what's "best" for the perception of the university. Easier to come to grips with him being inept(which is fair for other reasons)than it is to admit his staff worked illegal overtime and they still suck.

The NCAA should change the rules and get rid of “dead periods”. Sometimes a dead period may be the best time a recruit and their family can make it to campus, It doesn’t help anyone to have arbitrary contact periods.

The reason it was supposed to work was because they had Billy Napier in waiting as their Head Coach in Waiting until he bolted for U of L

What a scumbag move by ASU to pull on the seniors who now won’t be able to transfer out to try and make a bowl elsewhere.

Meanwhile Mr Integrity Herm Edwards slithered back to a ESPN where he can vomit out more bullshite platitudes about doing things the “right way”.

Hosting players during dead period, feeding them hot dogs, not letting a basketball player starve, or buying them mattresses will always get the harsher punishment than actual cheating. NCAA is dumb.

Hosting players during dead period,

Not only that, the COVID dead period… which shouldn’t have existed. Recruits and programs should have been able to take whatever precautions they needed

Well at least even if ASU hadn't self imposed a bowl ban, they don't look like they're going to be bowl eligible anyway.

2-6 with @Utah, @UCLA, Oregon and Arizona as their remaining schedule and needing to run the table

Should be another rule… if you declare your ineligibility for a bowl but you’re not eligible anyways, it carries over to the next time you are eligible

They didn't expect to be, that's the point.
