I purchased a reel mower and started cutting my backyard a few weeks ago and it's looking amazing. Tried on the lowest setting and the yard has slight I perfections and the blades bounce on these spots and it isn't flat. I ordered a leveling rake today. Should I use play sand, compost or a mix of both? Thanks

Play sand in small quantities. Mason sand in bulk.

I leveled it with a dump truck of sand a few months ago. It's not perfect. Gonna try to add a little at a time and get it flat. Will try the play sand

Have to drag that sand in forever to get it right. When you think you have dragged enough, keep dragging.

Compost sand mixes are nice if you want to bring some organic material into your yard. But being compost it will degrade. If you truly just need to level Mason sand/play sand as mentioned

Have thought about a reel mower but never used one. What’s the workout level? Does it bag? How often to use? Thx

It's easy as hell if it's sharp on Bermuda. Been doing every 3 days or so. No slower than my rotary mower. Probably would be hard if grass was tall. It's so short the clippings just fall back into the grass and you don't see them .I imagine centipede or something broader leaf would be different.
This is the grass after using the mower for about 2 weeks wasn't watering much before but am now that I'm cutting it short.

7 blade earthwise reel mower with a 5lb roller on the back. That’s if you have bermuda/zoysia. Don’t use it on st Aug or centipede

My friend bought a very nice reel mower with a Honda motor on it. Decided that his yard was too small to effectively use it.

I know he wants to sell it. Let me know if you're interested. He's in BR.

Obviously, if your lawn is too small, probably not a great idea.

Add weight to it the reel mower to solve the bouncing.

Play sand like others have said will help and shouldn’t have the potential for weeds.

Depending on the kind of Reel Mower you have you may be able to add a roller to it. I have a Scott’s 7-Blade and a 13lb roller coming tomorrow.

I have a great states 16in. I'll try to see if I can find a heavy roller. Didn't think of it.

Mine seems to have that already in the rear. I ordered the 16in Ashland roller to replace it. Hopefully with that and my leveling rake and some sand I can get it lower.
