We’re interested in visiting upstate NY’s Finger Lakes region and would like recommendations. We’ll be traveling in mid-October and have a week. We enjoy hiking, wineries, shopping, eating, enjoying nature. I realize that area is large and spread out, so please help me narrow it down. What areas have you visited and enjoyed? Hotel, VRBO or B&B recs appreciated. We will be driving up from Northern VA. Thanks!

Family lives near Rochester and has a place on lake canandaigua. Let me warn you, you may get below freezing temps and miserable weather in mid October. Or you may get beautiful fall weather with incredible foliage. Mid October is hit or miss

I would aim for late September/early October

Watkins Glen is a good place to start looking. Plenty of wineries/breweries/distilleries nearby. There's a state park right in town. Good food options too. Spotted Duck in Penn Yann is nearby and is an award-winning ice cream place. Ithaca isn't too far from Watkins Glen and on another lake. Yes, Ithaca is Gorges (intentional misspelling).

Go to Skaneateles Lake. Take a boat ride. Eat lunch at Doug's Fish Fry.

Finger Lakes are probably best known for wine now. They make some really excellent Rieslings and there are tons of wineries to visit, with much more affordable prices than other regions.

We did fall foliage road trips in that part of the world the past two years and we were there in May two years ago as well. IMO, Watkins Glen State Park is a must do. But check when the park closes for the season; it may be closed in late October.

We stayed at a hotel in Corning all three times.

The Corning Museum of Glass is also worth seeing. There is also a Rockwell Museum in Corning but it is not related to Normam Rockwell; different family. We didn't go to that museum so don't know about it.

Just south of WG is Montour Falls. If you watched the Aurora Teagarden Mysteries on Hallmark the opening scene is the water fall in this town.

WG is on the south end of Seneca Lake and last year we drove up the east side to Geneva. A Finger Lakes Welcome Center is there and they will sell you wine samples from the local places and other NY products as well. It is also a good place to get info about the wineries in the area.

Pics from the Corning Museum of Glass. We spent about a 1/2 day there. That black thing is a dress made of glass. We had lunch in their cafeteria and it was really good.

Watkins Glen State Park. It has 3 entrances (east, west and one kind of in the middle), there is a visitor center at the entrance on the east side in WG. It's a good place to get info. You can walk the trail, a little over a mile if I recall, and there is a shuttle that will take you to where you started. I think it cost $5 then. The ranger recommended an Italian place for dinner, Jerlando's, and it was good.

The waterfall in Montour Falls. It is right next to the road. Last year it did not have much water flowing; I guess they did not have much rain.

A few pictures from the road. We get off the interstates as much as we can. I think in that 2nd picture we saw a sign about a place that sold apple pies; had to check that out.

The temps for the rest of August and early September are forecast to be in the mid to upper 70s for highs with mid to lower 50s for lows. If these temps keep up it will be an early fall through this area in September and October.
