I have a 2017 Honda Civic with R-1234YF refrigerant. Been driving this car for 7 years and AC has never worked consistently. Had to fix it 3 times. I am thinking about selling my car and buying a new or fixing (quoted $5,0000 at dealership). Anyone recommend what the best option? I think a new car will have these issues later on if they use this new eco friendly refrigerant.

Get a quote from a reputable independent repair shop. It will likely be much, much less than the dealer and come with an equivalent warranty.

I work at a dealership…..that does seem pretty high. I would certainly get someone else to give me a quote. 1234 doesn’t cause problem and isn’t worse than 134. It’s just REALLY expensive. I’d be curious to know what they are replacing for 5k.

I have same refrigerant and had to replace condenser and compressor in a Yukon Denali. Cost 1800 with a test using refrigerant, parts, and refill of refrigerant. 5000 is super high

It was at highland car care since you’re in BR

I had my A/C compressor changed and recharged for 700.00 about two years ago. That sounds really high. Sorry you are having trouble. It is a terrible time to have A/C problems

Nothing is wrong with 1234YF other than it’s expensive. Your issue is with Honda. The 16 - 18s have AC issues. There is also an AC recall on them so you may need to check in to that.

That's too expensive. AC is a closed system that is not very complicated and any good repair shop should be able to diagnose your problem. The dealer probably wants you to sell so they can resell it at $10K. Try AGCO in BR on Coursey for the AC check.

That is entirely too expensive for that work. Take it to a local independent garage….preferably one that specializes in air conditioning. Take it to another town if you have to.

I am surprised at how many people know what refrigerant their vehicle used. I have NO idea what mine uses.

The answer is and will always be frick the government. They are the root of your problem.

Honda's have horrible a/c systems believe it or not. Not sure if it's still like this but 7-10 years ago the compressors would just explode internally and metal shavings would get into the system and you would have to replace everything. Not sure if that is still the case though.
