Looking to buy a camp in the near future. We mainly fish saltwater but of course most coastal camps can be here today gone tomorrow types of places with storms. Lately a few options on Lac Des Allemands have caught our eye.

Anyone reading ever make a run by boat from Lac Des Allemands down to Lafitte by boat? Curious if getting to brackish for reds is feasible from there. And even how long it would take. An hour and a half? Also, does Lake Salvador hold reds?

You’ll get better answers from guys that fish Salvador.

But a search showed that in 2014, reds were hard to get.
But in 2017 they were there.

Yes.

Depends how fast your boat is. It’s only about twenty miles or so. I can’t figure out how to measure on Google Maps.

Thanks, I really am wondering about those bridges near hwy 90 too as far as clearance goes. About 52mph top speed, but guessing there's a few no wake zones.

The railroad bridge is pretty low. The Old Hwy 90 bridge is higher. What are you driving?

You ought to go take a ride in your boat and scope it out. That’s the best way. You have a fast boat go burn some gas.

. It’s a big bayou. It’s only a couple of mile shot across Lake Salvador and you are protected in the summer from the prevailing winds. Lafitte to Grand Isle is open water. I’ve run from Des Allemands to Lafitte many times in an airboat.

Oh hell, if you're doing it in airboat then I can make it under that bridge. 19' bay boat here.

28 miles from Hwy 90 to Lafitte by boat. 34 miles from the actual southeast corner of Lac Des Allemands. Been about 15-20 years but during winter we would catch reds and trout on the south end of Lake Salvador where it drains into Perot.

You talking Pleasure Bend area? That's a nice ride just to get to the Des Allemands Bridge from there, then you have another nice run from the DA Bridge to get to the Mouth of Lake Salvador and that's all mostly fresh. You have to run through Lake Salvador to get to some good brackish water.

As far as fitting under the bridges you shouldn't have a problem. I've been under it a 17' Alweld CC with plenty room to spare.

If you want to see if your boat can fit there's a free launch under the HWY 90 overpass on the St. Charles side. You could launch there in be under the 2 low bridges in under 2 minutes.

I mean that’s a run man. It’s probably a good 20 mins from the north side of the lake to the bridge. No wake thru there then you can run on to the south end of Salvador. That’s a lot of boat riding.

A camp in the lake itself is pretty dang far boat ride for some saltwater action. I'm probably look elsewhere to be honest.

Really it's nothing compared to some offshore stuff. I was just wondering if it's even an option to make the run sometime for fun.

Should have no issues with any bridges in a 19 bay boat. I’ve made the trip a few times to lafitte fishing tournaments out of des allemands. Lafitte is t a bad run. On a calm day you can take the lake and on a rough day u can enter the inter coastal from the temple bay side.

Salvador gets big in the wind, you’d have to run the intracoastal on those days. From Lac Des Allemands that’s a fairly long run, 40 miles in the intracoastal, and that’s from the entrance of twin oaks bay.

I’d wonder about long term reds if that’s what you’re targeting. Before they opened the Davis Pond Diversion, you could catch reds in des allemends, not anymore. I’d imagine with mid baritaria opening that may impact the reds around lafitte in the longer term with more freshwater.

I love reds, but rather the freshwater than the land loss.

We had a hunting camp on Salvador off temple bay from 97-03 that lake gets rough. In that time frame the bay went from solid grass mat full of pouledeau in the winter to none and reds showing up. I’ve made the run from the lucky seven to Salvador a few times it isn’t terrible but it isn’t short either

People are catching reds right now in temple bay because we haven’t had enough rain to keep salinity low.

Neighbor went yesterday. The platforms that were in the middle of Salvador used to be the tits in the summer. Hundred fish days weren’t uncommon

Definitely something a lot of us fishermen are thinking about. The entire marsh fishery in the area is likely changing over time there.
