What happened to Royal China in Metairie?

Went there last night about 7:30 and the doors were locked. I remember reading that they changed ownership, but now closed?

closed shop. New owners apparently weren’t so good at running a restaurant

The family is running Mrs. Shirley on Magazine Street near Washington Avenue. Went last week, fantastic.

Mrs Shirley sold Royal China and retired. Then opened her place on Magazine.

Apparently as someone said up thread, the new owners must not have been too good

China Rose in fat city is a good Metairie option.

You sure about that?

About 6 months ago, visiting my elderly mother. We decided to get takeout from China Rose. We both got Mandarin Chicken combination platters. The chicken was very grizzly and was overcooked to where it had a burnt taste. The chicken fried rice was very very salty. The only decent thing were tge egg rolls.

After that, I vowed never again for China Rose.

Shirley sold to her cook and wife to retire. When that happened the loyalist stopped going to the restaurant. The new owners struggled to get back the clientele once Shirley opened her new place. Royal China was the same food cooked after she sold since it was the same cooks in the back. Sad situation, just because loyalist stopped going to support a long standing restaurant but, would go to New Orleans instead to eat. Crazy!

If it's the same cooks, how do you explain the reports of awful food?

Any regular who ate at Royal China knows who bought the restaurant so, it was not a surprise. Reports of awful food is an easy way to blame any restaurant closing but, may not be the reality.

Expound in your two post that you have made in this thread please.
Is there a dis-like of the new owners or something?

I had seen quite a few post in the area neighborhood facebooks groups about bad food. And a lot of these older folks probably haven’t been going to Magazine St, but have just found other places in Metairie to go to.

So, you're saying that a bunch of the reports of awful food are fake and untruthful and it was done as a conspiracy to get customers (loyalists?!!) to patronize Ms Shirley's new place?

As Biden would say-- C'mon Man!

Shirley’s head cook was her husband. He left with her. Some random lady with more money than sense and no restaurant experience bought it. Probably lost her arse on that venture.
++++++++++++
Shirley Lee and her husband Tang Lee, the restaurant’s chef, are retiring and selling the restaurant they founded 44 years ago. Their last day on the job is Tuesday (Nov. 30). The restaurant is slated to reopen the next day with a new owner.

That’s Ruby DeRouen, a native of China who has lived in New Orleans for two decades. She’s been training at the restaurant during the Lees’ last days and said she wants to make a smooth transition. Members of the Lee family plan to help along the way.

Mrs Shirley's on Mag is up there with some of the worst Chinese I have ever had. The only flavor that keeps coming through is corn syrup and red number 12.

I'm not even hating on cheap chinese food. I love the stuff. Mrs Shirleys just wasn't good.

I can’t speak for the regular menu since I’ve never ordered off of it but I’ve had decent dishes off of the authentic “Chinese” menu that you have to ask for.
