Texans who drive all-electric vehicles will pay the price to the state.

Beginning Sept. 1, owners of those vehicles will pay a $200 fee to the state at the time of registration or renewal.

New electric vehicles issued two years of registration to match a two-year inspection will have to pay a $400 fee.

"For every 'fully electric' vehicle that is purchased and operated on a Texas roadway that is just that much less fuel tax that is not being paid being paid on the purchase of gasoline," Wichita County Tax Assessor-Collector Tommy Smyth said in an email sent to county employees Wednesday. "There is no way that those who over-see the state coffers are going to just let that amount of revenue fall off the end of the table without having some way of mitigating their losses."

So $200 for a year?

If you don't need that car for long trips, absolutely worth it.

I just saw an ad where you can lease one for $385 a month.

Louisiana needs to do this.

But double whatever fee Texas is charging.

Also, while we’re at it, add $20 to the cost of vehicle registration and renewal in Louisiana and GET RID of ‘inspection stickers’.

Yay another tax.

Why should someone be penalized for not using fuel?

I say this as a proud owner of a gas guzzling Chevy Silverado.

They have to capture some road use tax. It makes sense.

I’m so glad this nation was founded to fight against and protect us from unfair taxes.

Texas gas tax = $.20 per gallon. To reach $200 would require the purchase of 1,000 of gas, for a 30 mpg car that means 30,000 miles per year to reach the equivalent EV tax. Doesn't seem exactly fair.

They should try to recover some of those losses.

That being said, your typical driver isn't paying $200/year in gasoline taxes either.

It’s not, especially when you consider the cost of collecting the fuel taxes but the argument for it is that the gas tax is too low and really needs to be increased. Which is probably true. Either way it’s a small price to pay to not have to frick with gas stations. I told my wife about this a few months ago when it came out and her response was essentially “lulz worth it”.

It was a lazy solution but sometimes government be like that.

Yep, and leave it to the OT to love the lazy solution, and big government- as long as it penalizes EV drivers .

Good. Maybe fewer will be purchased. They will drain the grid so screw ‘em.

Agreed though being a flat fee it isn't proportional like a fuel tax is. I would also argue it is probably about twice what it should be. A 30mph car driven 15k a year (over the national average) will use 500 gallons of gas which in TX means $100 in revenue to Texas via their fuel tax.

These types of fees feel like gateways to yearly inspections and registration fees based on mileage.

Meaning more regulation and more people required to regulate it.

It was lazy and a virtue signal all at once. That’s a pretty perfect solution for a politician.

EVs not only use the roads they also use the electrical grid. Remind me of the last time Texas was out of gasoline, they are getting off easy at $200 per year.

Louisiana already milks it’s citizens at every junction it can with little to nothing in return.

This state would rather fill it’s soul with excessive and unnecessary feasting and proudly disregard all those empty bellies of the poor.
