Last Minute Scotland Trip - Any Advice?

Got invited at the last minute to go to St. Andrews, scotland next week. We are going to play Fairmont Torrance, St. Andrews New, and either St. Andrews Jubilee or Castle. Will also obviously attempt to play The Old Course through the ballot. Anybody have any tips on whether Jubilee or Castle is better? Any spots to for sure hit in St. Andrews when not golfing?

Since you are already playing the New, which is similar to but better than Jubilee, I would play Castle for more variety. Also consider Dumbarnie or Kingsbarns, both are spectacular but expensive, Dumbarnie somewhat less so.
If you don’t get on the old course, you aren’t missing out all that much IMO. You can walk around a lot of it at any time and all of it in the evening. New course is better and the locals tend to agree.

Dunvegan hotel bar to look at all the pictures hanging on the wall
Cathedral ruins are cool

North Berwick is a must. Scotland golf is the best. Firm/Fast and browned out grass should be more acceptable in the US because it’s so much more fun than perfectly green and manicured.

very small town which makes it easy for walking - The scores, north, market, South streets. Check out the university and the castle and cathedral ruins. Lots of good pubs to hang out in - Dunvegan already mentioned but also hit up the pubs in town like the Central, Criterion, Whey Pat, Keys, etc etc. Daughter went to University there - its a great town to just hang out in.
For food The Steak Barn at Balgove, The Grange, Forgans, and any of the Chip places.

North Berwick is not a reasonable day trip from St Andrews. 3.5 hours of driving if you happen to have a car or 5 hours of trains.
Carnoustie is reasonable and a good course, the train station in Carniustie is within walking distance of the course. $$$ also.
Overall I think you will find that the quality of golf courses over there is so much higher than here that the differences between “the best” and “good” are much smaller than in the states and more a matter of taste than anything else.

Check the tees sheet for the next day. Clubhouse guys were very helpful. If the sheet is full, you may not have a lot of luck.
If the tee sheet is more open, you have a shot. Get in the queue the night before at about midnight/1:00am.

We will probably be in the minority, but I agree. Old Course is great for the history and I had goosebumps walking up for the first time. Other than the 1st, and 16-18, the holes are pretty forgettable. Enjoyed Kingsbarns and North Berwick much more. North Berwick kicked my arse.

Panmure is right next to Carnoustie for much less money and is a fun course. Hogan played there to prepare for his only Open win at Carnoustie
