Deer hunting with a 12ga

Thinking about hunting in hurricane torn woods with a saddle and shotgun this year. Anybody ever hunt with this approach? Do you prefer buckshot or slugs?
EDIT: Only reason I wouldn’t use a rifle is because there are so many tree tops down that I’m not sure a scope would work

I’d only choose slugs if your shotgun has a rifles barrel.

If you shoot buckshot don’t use OO Buck. Use #1 buckshot.
In a 2 3\4 shell you have 9 .32 caliber pellets for 00.
32 30.caliber pellets in #1 Buck. More pellets let the air of of them quickly.
Shotguns suck for deer.

Slugs. I set up an 1187 for this. 1st thing i did was order a Cylinder choke. Not improv cyl, Just Cylinder. It is straight pipe-no taper.
Then i ordered a box of several type slugs, including some German stuff .
The absolute best is Winchester Deer Hunter. 2 3/4 i think they are. 1600 fps
At 50 yards they stack. Regular smooth barrel.

I prefer buckshot. Federal flite control buckshot has changed the game. It patterns incredibly well and ultra consistent. Regular buckshot is obsolete for hunting now.
Why use a slug? Just bring a rifle. Unless theres a good reason you can't bring one, a rifle is better 10 times outta 10.

Nah. LOTS of deer have been put in the pot with buckshot.
It's just so incredibly inferior to a rifle. If a shotgun is all you've got than buckshot is a fine choice. If you have any kind of rifle, use that.

Slug (BearBall as pow pow called it), in the chamber, two double oughts coming hot after it in case they start running. That was the recipe when I was growing up.

As someone who has killed multiple deer with a shotgun, just take a rifle. I would go with a BAR in 7mm-08 with a red dot on it, but plenty of AR platform and lever gun options too.

I hunted for several years in shotgun only areas up north (due to small tracts of land). Used a 4X Scope mounted to my old 870 pump. Improved cylinder and rifled slugs. Good out to 50-60 yards, and a lot of deer flew home with me.
Deposit that big chunk of lead in their boiler room and they’ll be doing the Curley shuffle and falling where they were.

If you find some #1 let me know. I need some for dog season.

Forgive me Poor wording on my behalf.
You said it right. I have killed many deer with a shotgun.
I didn’t want to say a .22 Mag or .17 HMR behind the ear will get them. A rifle is always better.
Wally Johnson perfected the “ behind the ear “ shot on elephants with a .375 Holland and Holland shot out of Winchester Model 70.
For those to like to read and may not know of this hunter here is a link. Wally Johnson. The Last Ivory Hunter.
The book is great as are all of Robert Ruark’s.
Sorry to get of topic just wanted to share some good hunting stuff. Peter Capstick also has good books.
I wish I could have hunted Africa in the 50’s and 60’s. Can you imagine ?

It’s kinda like the muzzleloader thread.
We just like to see what we can do with the slugs.

You don't have a clue what your talking about. 00 is the only way to go. Killed 7 deer over the last two years and each was a one shot kill. No running off, no tracking. I'm a thicket hunter, hunt my own land and wouldn't have it any other way. Up close and personal is a beautiful thing. At least for me.

I made a one shot ne kill with a .22 S&W 6” revolver out of a willow tree. It’s all about bullet placement. #1 places more bullets into the meat.
Don’t want to ague with young’uns. I do have clues. I never said 00 won’t kill.
#1 makes more holes in them.
When I was an outlaw n the 70’s we would should 7 deer a night. Besides what we would shoot during the day.
Then I got a 30/06.
I have been reformed now for decades.

My dad shot everything he ever hunted from blackbirds and doves and ducks and geese to rabbits and squirrels to deer with a Savage 16-gauge pump. He used slugs for deer and just worked his way in and waited for the right shot.
My father-in-law used to walk the deer up in the marsh with his Browning A5 humpback 12-gauge. He favored 00. He could shoot them two at a time if the opportunity arose.
Two men who were the proverbial Man With One Gun, and by god they knew how to use them. It's the shooter, not the gun.

Nah. 1 buck is great.
0B is pretty cool too.
I like buckshot. Pure nostalgia. Everybody used buckshot at our camp for a long time.

I use a .444 with a 3x9 scope turned down for this. Never had any trouble getting on the deer with it.

Like Loup, I have a .444 with a low magnification scope on it for these instances.
If you’re set on a shotgun you’ll get a lot of opinions. Me personally, #4 buck out of a Turkey choke. Can’t express how important it is to pattern your gun, too. Find the shells your gun likes.

I'm not just saying this, but I've killed more deer with a shotgun than anything else. I have my Pawpaws old Mossberg bolt action 12 with the Selectachoke. Its deadly. My biggest buck was shot at 9 yards quartering away with it. Folded like a lawn chair.
