Except that paradoxically, widespread availability and usage of birth control correlates with higher unwanted pregnancies and higher number of abortions.
Societies undergo radical transformation once birth control is readily available. Sexual mores begin changing rapidly.
The number of sexual partners sky rockets over the first couple of generations and the consequences on the family structure and the way that children are developmentally maltreated, neglected and abused are devastating for societies.

I would say demographics. But Russia defies that reasoning. Probably the lack of education is the biggest reason.
