Sean Payton rips Nathaniel Hackett for Broncos job

Never seen a coach come out and just slam the previous coach. Hackett did a terrible job, but Payton's comments are strange. Almost feels like he's trying to set realistic expectations for the Broncos this year.

In an expansive mood, Payton called the work Nathaniel Hackett and his staff did with the 2022 Broncos "one of the worst coaching jobs in the history of the NFL" and said there were "20 dirty hands" around quarterback Russell Wilson's career-worst season that included just 16 touchdown passes and a league-high 55 sacks.
quote:
"It doesn't happen often where an NFL team or organization gets embarrassed," Payton told USA Today. "And that happened here. Part of it was their own fault, relative to spending so much [expletive] time trying to win the offseason -- the PR, the pomp and circumstance, marching people around and all this stuff.
quote:
"That wasn't his fault," Payton added. "That was the parents who allowed it. That's not an incrimination on him but an incrimination on the head coach, the GM, the president and everybody else who watched it all happen. Now, a quarterback having an office and a place to watch film is normal. But all those things get magnified when you're losing. And that other stuff, I've never heard of it. We're not doing that."

He's making it sound like an easy turnaround.

Did they replace their GM or did Payton just throw his boss under the bus?

The way I read all that was "we have a long way to go"

Says a guy who habitually went 7-9 with one of the best offenses year in and year out.

Just a few months ago he was bragging on their Advanced abilities to analyze personnel and now they're a bucket of crap? Sounds like damage control to me. If he had handled his departure from here in a more honest straight forward way I might would cut Payton some slack but the grass isn't always greener now is it?

I've seen other quotes where he talks about all the ways they stepped on their own dicks. Things like not being able to get plays in - led the league in presnap penalties.
Alot of things that he should be able to fix year 1.
And he said Wilson was fine, not to blame.

In fairness we did have a stretch where we went 7-9 three years in a row. The offense was very good statistic wise but inconsistent, but the D was abysmal. The talk here was plenty of FIRE SP. Then Ireland came in and fixed our scouting and drafting, and this team turned around in a big way.
It was a talent issue mostly, but there were some odd coaching things happening as well.

His 152-89 puts him in the upper tier of coaches. He put together some great offenses but struggled often on defense and still amassed that record. Even with some of the negativity in the playoffs he was still 9-8. It is massively difficult to win in the NFL. If the worst you've done was have 2 or 3, 7-9 seasons in a 15 year stretch you've done a pretty damn good job.

Yeah, I much prefer the Saints before Payton came.

You realize there are only three head coaches during the time with multiple Super Bowl right? It’s extremely hard to get to the Superbowl, much less win it. That’s not a loser mentality. What Payton did for the saints honestly before him People didn’t think the saints would ever see the success they did under him.

Hes not wrong, that clock management againts the Seahawks was Les Miles esque

Really glad we don't have to deal with that sucker anymore. Let him go smoke his bong and turn that team around.
