According to mlb.com, the report from 6 hours ago says that Cameron Johnson did not agree to terms. I know there was confusion yesterday about the website saying he’d signed for $150k. Looks like the big lefty will be coming to campus

It seems like baseball is the biggest beneficiary of nil. MLB won’t pay a crazy amount. And the season is immensely harder.

150k?

He could've gotten way more than that.

It’s not NIL that got him here. It’s the draft… bonus pools are not large, only 20 rounds now, influx of college talent due to 2020 draft being just 5 rounds.

If I'm reading you correctly, you're saying since most high school kids went to college due to 2020 draft, that selection of kids is now taking spots away from high school kids today?

So just a big turning wheel of more and more talent coming to college

NIL and a partial scholarship still can’t compete with the MLB.

Players are realizing the timeframe from high school to the MLB is the same if you go to college or pro out of high school. The quality of life at a big time college program is 1000 times better than playing single A and double A baseball for 3 years so might as well choose college. Unless a MLB team is willing to give you generational wealth.

It has nothing to due with the covid season. The trend had started before that. The draft has shrunk and teams have a budget. College kids are cheaper than high school kids(& somewhat less risky) is basically what it boils down to. Professional teams have to be more creative with spending.

The COVID stuff allowed MLB to push for the things that will continue to drive the trend though.

By removing two levels of minor leagues, you're taking away a lot of the development opportunities for high school guys.

It's pretty much complex league and sink or swim in Low A.

They used to be able to let guys breathe a little longer in the two short season levels.

And now, they need guys that can contribute at low A and high A right away to replace the washouts from the complex league. But that's more back end of the draft stuff.

Only about 17% of the signees in this years draft were from high school. I think that will increase next year, but it will a blip rather than a full reversal of the trend.

ETA: People think MLB is outsourcing development to colleges. That's not really it. They're outsourcing the washout to colleges.

Right, I guess I could have been more specific. This isn’t a result of some type of talent over flow due to covid. It’s due to a complete change in the structure of the draft.

A ton of high school talent that went to college in 2020 became available again this year making the draft very college heavy and, yes, lots of high school talent is going to college again because of it.

I’m talking about this year specifically. The last two years were closer to normal.

Man I know the start of football season is basically upon us, but damnit, I'm not done with my baseball high yet.

I'm probably setting my expectations way too high, but it sure seems like we've got a strong set of incoming talent to try to replinish the gems who have departed.

How many more days till Adam does his February preseason review/hype train?
