Over the weekend, I saw some show on TV and the guy was using an open pit grill. I then saw the Meat Church video posted on this board and he was using one as well. I have a BGE and gas grill but am now thinking of trying one of the following:

Old Country BBQ Pits Vaquero Open Fire Grill
Academy Link

or this one...

Oklahoma Joe's Firecraft 29-in W Black Barrel Charcoal Grill
Lowes Liink

I like the Oklahoma Joe better but it does not have casters.

Anyone have either one of these and how do you like it?

Look up Santa Maria grills.

I would love one, but my patio is about filled with my pits already. TFor me, it would be more for fun as I can do the same thing with my charcoal grill.

The only way we would cook Tri-Tip when we lived in Lompoc CA was that kind of pit grill.

You could also go out on a Saturday and see these kind of pits cooking up tri-tip, Santa Maria Style Pinquito Beans, a side salad, and a chunk of garlic toasted bread.

You may or may not like the twist and adjust style handles. I like the wheel version allowing you to lower and raise as you see fit. I get the two options of cooking different things with the handle adjusting style, but just my preference is all.

Also look at Cowboy, argentine, gaucho style pits. All pretty much do the same thing just different names and methods.

Before I dropped a lot of money I would get a camping tripod and a fire pit. Try it and see if I liked the result. I’ve seen a guy cook a whole chicken that way hanging from a hook.

Most versatile grill on the planet is a Weber Kettle, and I cook with it open all the time. There are accessories that allow you to raise/lower your grates, as well if you feel the need.

Yeah, cannot see the advantage over a Weber.

hmmmm, interesting. Price is right too. 130.00 on amazon, of course you need the kettle to begin with, but if you're already looking at buying a whole unit anyway, why not?

Nice!

Thanks for the advice folks as I am going to go the Weber route with that accessory/attachment.

I agree, there is not much that can compare to an open fire cook. Whenever I'm camping or hunting I try to cook everything over the fire. Pancakes cooking in the bacon drippings over a white oak fire from a tree that fell a short walk away on a chilly morning is the best.

I start these fires with B&B Charlogs, they are great. My dad likes it so much he bought the charlogs for his Weber Kettle.
