An American citizen has been detained in North Korea after straying across the border into the Communist country without permission during a tour, the United Nations Command said Tuesday.

The detainee has been identified as Travis King, a US Army member with the rank of private second class, reported South Korea’s Dong-a Ilbo newspaper, citing South Korea’s army.

King was taking part in a visit to the Joint Security Area — the border village in the demilitarized zone separating the two Koreas that is guarded by soldiers from both sides — when he reportedly crossed the border around 3:27 p.m. local time, according to local reports.

An eyewitness who was part of the same tour group as King told CBS News that they had just visited one of the buildings at the JSA village when “this man [King] gives out a loud ‘Ha, ha, ha,’ and just runs in between some buildings.

UPDATED

Two U.S. officials said the soldier detained was Private 2nd Class Travis King, who had just been released from a South Korean prison where he’d been held on assault charges and was facing additional military disciplinary actions in the United States.

King, who’s in his early 20s, was escorted to the airport to be returned to Fort Bliss, Texas, but instead of getting on the plane, he left and joined a tour of the Korean border village of Panmunjom, where he ran across the border, the officials said on the condition of anonymity to discuss the matter ahead of a public announcement.

At a Pentagon press conference Tuesday, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin did not name King, but confirmed that a U.S. service member was likely now in North Korean custody.

“We’re closely monitoring and investigating the situation and working to notify the soldier’s next of kin,” Austin said, noting he was foremost concerned about the troop’s wellbeing. “This will develop in the next several days and hours, and we’ll keep you posted.”

Hmmmm, I don't think that is a thing. If it went down like they said, I don't think the Norks will keep him too long.

Amid tensions with North Korea, US nuclear-capable submarine
2 hours ago · A U.S. Navy nuclear-capable submarine on Tuesday made a port call in South Korea for the first time in decades. The USS Kentucky made a rare stop in Busan, marking the first time a nuclear ballistic missile submarine visited South Korea since 1981.

Hey! I've been there before.

Fun fact: Blue buildings are owned by the UN and you can go inside those. One of which is a conference room where you can technically step into North Korea. However when I was there a really intimidating South Korean guard would keep you from exiting the door on the north side.

Do they not tell people not to run across that concrete lip between the buildings? The guards both American and Korean were pretty adamant about not allowing you in between the buildings and warned you several times if the North Korean guards get you, all hope is lost.

He was probably a private E-2 meaning this guy just got to his unit in Korea from training. The norks probably don't care and will use him for propaganda or a bargaining chip for food. What a dumbass.

This news is the major headline ATM. No other news seemed to release his name but the NYPost.

I also don't see the hahaha stuff any where else.

It sucks that our MSM is such propaganda we don't know what to believe. The United Nations will negotiate. lol.

If he is a tranny soldier Biden & Austin will send Dennis R or Sean Penn to get him and hope it boosts Biden's poll numbers.

Sickening. And yes. what a dumbass this Travis whoever is.

He'll be shipped back in a "vegetative state" just like Otto Warmbier was, right after NK State television records him denouncing the USA.

Or he can come back like Charles Jenkins. He decided to defect in the mid 1960s while on a patrol and was in NK for 40 years. Stayed, taught English, and was even married a Japanese woman who was captured by the North Koreans. When his wife was released back to Japan in 2002, Jenkins was able to follow a few years later. Once released, Jenkins was court martialed for desertion.

Well this is pretty much an open and shut case then.

King was to be separated from the military for cause, and was supposed to go back to the U.S., according to the official, but he missed his flight.

A U.S. defense official also told Fox News the soldier was on a tour in a personal capacity and was wearing civilian clothes at the time of the incident.

King, according to one official that spoke to Fox News, disobeyed orders and went on a tour of the DMZ and then broke away from the tour group.
