Major League Cricket (MLC) is a professional Twenty20 cricket league in the United States. Operated by American Cricket Enterprises (ACE) and sanctioned by USA Cricket, it began play on July 13, 2023, with six teams representing major U.S. cities under a single-entity model. The first season is taking place over three weeks at Grand Prairie Stadium in Grand Prairie, Texas, and Church Street Park in Morrisville, North Carolina, concluding on July 30, 2023.

Twenty-two men will paint North Texas purple, gold and yellow Thursday for a game of bat and ball during the historic debut of Major League Cricket. The sport is wildly popular in many places, but not in the United States.

The Texas Super Kings will host the Los Angeles Knight Riders in the opening match of a 19-match tournament at the newly transformed 7,200-seat Grand Prairie Stadium near Dallas.

"It's a new beginning for cricket in this country," said Zubin Surkari, who is managing operations for Major League Cricket. "T20 (a shorter format) is an exciting three hours of cricket, the pitch looks great, the field looks great. This has never been done in terms of a stadium of this magnitude."

MLC is a $120 million investment from multiple entities — mainly Sameer Mehta and Vijay Srinivasan, co-founders of Willow TV, the largest broadcaster of cricket in North America.

The two businessmen plan to grow the game in the United States by bringing in international talent, and building stadiums and training facilities in hopes of cultivating the new generation of U.S. cricketers.

The game is easy enough to understand, it’s the scoring and when you have to switch that I don’t know.

Agreed. Can anyone explain how to read the score board to a novice?

Texas batted first and scored 181 runs in their batting stint and only 6 of their players got out, so they were 181 for 6. LA only got 112 runs and all* of their players got out, all out for 112. The score was thus 181/6 to 112 and Texas won by 69 runs.

In this form of cricket there's only one inning. So one team bats and then the other team bats. Players keep on batting until they're out. But in 20-20 there's a hard limit of 20 overs. Each over has 6 legal balls bowled (pitched). So you face 120 balls total, unless you're all out first.

So cricket's a big chase. The first team batting puts up a total and the second team tries to chase it down before being all out or running out of overs.

Compare to where Washington put up 144/7 first (144 runs, 7 outs/wickets). Then Seattle chased it down in 19.4 overs 144/5. In that case it's said that Seattle won by 5 wickets, because they stop batting once they chase the total down. More important here is the 19.4 overs - they chased it down with only 2 balls remaining in the last over so it was a really close call.

I posted the following in another thread.

quote:

I started watching the beautiful game of cricket last year when ESPN+ carried the 2022 IPL. I have been watching the 2023 ICC World Cup Qualifying games on replay on ESPN+. Cricket is the predecessor to our nation's pastime. My favorite format is One Day International (ODI) which is the format for the ICC World Cup.

I may subscribe to Willow for more cricket games access; I wish ESPN carried more cricket. Might attend an MLC game over in nearby GPTX should time allow...

Edited to add: Learning and understanding the Laws of Cricket is no easy endeavor. I find cricket to be a much more complex and cerebral game than my beloved game of baseball.
