Great watch. Did a rewatch the other night and just as good as always.

Quick question: could the judge really have that much power. In the grand scheme of things, one is allowed to represent themselves. Why was Vinny so scared the judge would find his real background? The judge had to allow him to represent the yutes regardless, right? Do courts have that strict of a dress code?

Vinny wasn't a member of the Alabama bar association so the judge had to rule he was ok to represent the defendant in the Alabama court. It's not complicated.

Same deal with Trump's lawyers in cases in NY and Florida and soon to be Georgia, the judge in each case will have to approve his attorneys if they aren't a member of that state's bar association.

I don’t think a judge can approve an out-of-state non-reciprocal lawyer. Vinny would have to be pro hac vice (allowed to represent the client in front of the court along with local counsel).

You can represent yourself, but you cannot represent someone else unless you meet the state’s qualifications (usually passing the bar in that state).

The funniest part of that movie to me has always been the way Fred Gwynne immediately sits up and says "the two whhhhut" as soon as Joe Pesci says yutes. I don't know why but I bust out laughing as soon he does it. It's just great comedic timing.

Yea pretty much

Not if he’s not a licensed attorney in the state. And your ability to represent yourself is just that. You can represent yourself. A non-lawyer (or non-licensed lawyer) cannot represent you most places.

Some do

The scene when they are at the diner. The menu.

Breakfast - $1.99
Lunch - $2.49
Dinner - $3.49

My uncle, a lawyer with a lot of trial experience, has always said it’s the most accurate portrayal of a trial—I guess from start to finish—in a movie. By comparison, I remember him saying A Few Good Men was laughable.

Watched it a week ago and it's a great rewatch every time. Love that movie. Tomei and the judge were very good.

Saw it recently as well on Pluto. Great movie.

I will say however that most of the southern accents were way overdone….but I assume the NY stuff was overdone too so no big deal.
