No issues with YouTube TV. All you need is wifi and a firestick

Does someone even need a Firestick to cast YouTube tv onto their tv screen, if they have a smart tv ?

Our local news on NBC is one of our go to channels, especially for weather. And me in the fall for SNF. What a bummer. I’m almost 40 and perhaps late to the game, but I’ve avoided going the streaming route. But I’m told that will be the future.

Of course antenna helps out a lot for the additional Subchannels and extra channels not carried on those streaming services, but carried on cable.

It just depends on your location and where you are in relation to your stations. Baton Rouge though is horrible for local TV reception, the two main stations are in wasteland of VHF in digital, and the Fox and NBC stations are owned by Nexstar who are more than happy to gouge you through your cable provider for retransmission fees. They would prefer you to pick up their station via cable which are sometimes directly fed to so over the air signal suffers.

Over the Air TV does have one last gasp, but it is coming out slowly though is ATSC 3.0. It is an upgraded standard that will allow 4K broadcasts and more bandwidth. Right now many stations are sharing resources to put on nightlight ATSC broadcasts.

For example, New Orleans has 6 of its big stations on one 3.0 channel. Using newer compression, each station uses only about 2-4 Mbps for an HD signal while most stations use double or triple that to get a decent HD signal. The big issue now is encryption, some station groups don’t want just any one being able to decode the stations. There are certain boxes and TVs that have the right encryption key and can tune those stations fine despite the encryption.

It’s an issue with AT&T and Nexstar and Sinclair. Between them they own about 300 local tv channels nationwide. Specific stations and networks depending on which channels they own in a given area. Our regular Fox channel has been off air for months while in some areas seems to be NBC. Depends on which of those media companies own the local channels where you live.

Directv split from AT&T awhile back, but they also took Uverse from AT&T.

Why the hell am I still paying AT&T for tv service if they don't own Uverse anymore? Do they just cut a check to whoever owns it now?

I'm not disputing what you're saying, but a lot of that shite doesn't make sense.

My Uverse tv is the ONE thing from AT&T that has actually performed worth a shite. DirecTV turned to shite a long time ago.

That's a feature, not a bug.

Okay point of clarification, AT&T did divest Unverse, Directv, and DIrectv Stream into its own company, but they still own a majority stake in the new company so they are offering services in kind.

They did this so that AT&T could hide how much they lost in the deal with subscribers counts down nearly 47%.

Yeah, I was curious enough to look into it. I knew they had spun off or sold DirecTV, but wasn't sure on the Uverse side of things.

I can put a paper clip in my tv and get NBC. CBS and ABC are a bit trickier

edit: Just to be clear, if you live close to a city, you can put a paper clip into the antenna/cable port on the back of the tv and get atleast FOX and NBC

I will ask again: Does someone even need a Firestick to cast YouTube tv onto their tv screen, if they have a smart tv ?

TIA

Just buy a digital antenna. They're good to have around, anyway, in case the tv/internet shits the bed completely.
