My "new" grill/smoker just in time for the 4th

Back in 1996 or 97 I won a Weber kettle grill in a game of bingo at my elementary school carnival. I was 8, didn't have much use for a charcoal grill so it was put in my parents garage, then the attic and completely forgotten.
I recently found it and decided to put it together to run as a smoker. I've been using a Masterbuilt electric for years and had been looking to try something else.
It's a pretty basic 18.5" "Bar-B-Kettle". It pre-dates the one touch so it's got the 3 adjustable vents on the bottom. Looking forward to using it for a pork on Tuesday. As I said, I started with the Masterbuilt and I've used it for years but want to try another method for smoking.

Odd elementary school carnival prize.

Get to it, though!

Goggle the "snake method." You make a small stack of coals around the outer perimeter and put lit coals on one end. About half-way through you may need to move your meat to the opposite side to keep the offset going on the 18.5.

Too bad we can’t go back to 1996 with everything!

All I use to smoke butts, ribs, wings, burnt ends... Get it dialed in and it's a great set up.

They make devices now for these hat can basically get your temp where you want it and hold it. Basically what pellet smokers do.

Snake Method but on an 18:, you'll struggle for real estate if the cut of meat is too large.
Legit CSB.

This. I'd use the 18 for grilling and get a cheap 22 for smoking.
I'd really recommend a 26", but they aren't cheap.

Chud’s BBQ did a whole YouTube series on cooking things on the Weber kettle. Enjoy!

Gorgeous.
I’m currently smoking a brisket on mine.

Friend,
You might want to hold the smoke there. At least check in with a few Weber forums to see if this vintage smoker still in box has a value greater than what a new one would run. Weber Kettle Club

Once it gets to temp, you may need to adjust your top vent to keep it from getting too hot. Mine runs fine at half-closed. I leave my bottom vents full open.

That's an area that lacks some clarity for me. So I was planning to run the top vent wide open and adjust temperature as needed via the bottom 3 vents. Not the right call? I'll certainly defer to those with more knowledge than me. Moving from the electric to the kettle, active temperature management is a new element for me.

I do the opposite. I would say that how many lit coals you start with set the tone. For smoking 10-12, briquets is plenty. You can only swing the temp with the vents so much.
