Going on a cruise in the Mediterranean out of Rome in October. It’ll make 6 stops along the coast of Italy, France, and Spain. Have any of you ever done this? How was it?

I have. I have been on one on Holland America that began and ended in Rome. Loved it. Had a great time.
Cruises are not my favorite way to see Europe because the ships do not spend enough time in port, especially at night when I want to be in good local restaurants. And sometimes the attractions are not near the ports. Rome and Florence are two examples of this.
But, they are a lot of fun and you will enjoy it.

Did a 12 day cruise to and from Rome back in 2010. It was incredible for us. Very different crowd and atmosphere from your Caribbean cruises.
We stayed 2 days in Rome both before and after the cruise.
Naples - climbed Mt Vesuvius and visited ruins of Pompeii
Venice - ship parked overnight so we got to spend 2 full days and a night there exploring and going to private dinner, etc
Croatia - went to countryside family wine and cheese making farm and then spent the afternoon in Dubrovnik
Sicily - spent the day in Tourmina and went atop Mt Etna
Barcelona - no excursion , we hung out and wife shopped on La Rambla. Went see the Sagrada Familia
Nice/Monaco - canceled due to dangerous weather and ship couldn’t dock. Disappointed.
Florence - quick tour to Pisa in the morning and then spent rest of the day exploring and hanging out in Florence. Michelangelos David, the Zeus and Perseus statues, etc. It was a drive to get to each; wish we would have had more time in Florence.
The days were very long. Ship stayed in port way longer than Caribbean ports. There was a lot of time each day to get a decent taste of each location.
I was glad to see the top of Mt Vesuvius and see Leaning tower of Pisa in person and check those boxes. But for future trips, we would prefer to just spend time along Almafi Coast and spend a week in Tuscany and Florence.
Have fun. Hopefully you enjoy a similar time.

Halfway through a 12-day on Seabourn.
Barcelona, Menorca, Sete, Bandol, St Tropez (today), Trapani Sicily, Gozo Malta, Valletta Malta, Taormina Sicily, Lipari, Amalfi and Rome.
Menorca was awesome. French food is great but they’re assholes. They need a reminder that they’d be goose-stepping to this day if not for us. The beer is phenomenal everywhere.

I recommend private tours in the port stops. We used a company called Rome in Limo in the italian ports. Private car for me, wife and 2 kids. Drivers know how to beat the crowds. Not really any more expensive than booking the bus tours through the ship.

We did a 12 day Adriatic cruise on the Serenade of the Seas a number of years ago. Left from Rome, hit Naples, Sicily, Montenegro, Croatia, Slovenia, Venice, and Corfu. It was fantastic, probably the best cruise we've done.

We are looking right now for either just regular trip or a cruise. Will be our first time to Italy. Wife, me, 11 yr old daughter and my in laws in their 70s. For first time cruise might be best option to see more. Any opinions on best lines?

We like Royal Caribbean.

We go on Norwegian if we go on a cruise. No other reason than my wife gets 1-2 free cruises a year from them.

guide book
Did one a few years ago and thought this Rick Steves guidebook was well worth it. We were doing the same excursions as the ones offered through the ship at much better prices, thanks to his recommendations.

Celebrity or Viking for Europe.
Any premium line with smaller ships. Smaller ships can get into ports the larger ones can’t.

Just don't do a Viking River Cruise--they're foe the newlywed or nearly dead. Nothing else.
