It’s disgusting to see EBR give big raises to teachers

I’m reading this poorly written article in the local newspaper (toilet paper) where they want to give teachers and support staff in EBR an 8% or $6,000 raise. Like bro, the school system is shite, and I know some teachers. The only way I’d be down with this, is if they cut all the bs administrative fat and fired all these looney toon teachers. Even then, I still think you’re paying a lot of glorified babysitters too much money.
If they are flushed with this amount of cash to fund this crap, then we need to cut taxes paid through property tax to fund this crap. It’s plain and simple. By the way, they’ll be cutting jobs within the next 5 years any way. The world is about to be changing in Louisiana government school funding.
C'est la vie!

Usually the people bitching about this type of stuff make a pretty meaningless contribution to society anyway if we're being honest

Whats the avg teacher's pay in BR?

Glad I don’t fit the stereotype.

You act like teachers are bringing in a huge salary.

Oh I'm sure you do
You're probably just some average middle class guy only bitching about this because you think you're making some meaningful contribution to their salary increases
You aren't

Why don't you go volunteer or sub for a few days in a public school. Go to a planning (PLC) meeting with teachers, attempt to read, comprehend the curriculum and then teach it in a way that will engage your students. Then come back here and update us.
Not every teacher is a crappy teacher, just like every doctor isn't on cocaine or every cop is a bad cop. Educators work very hard during the school day and after hours. Sorry that your friends are crappy people and teachers

They could pay them 100k a year and the schools would still suck
Shitty kids and parents = shitty schools

Dude, this is their first raise in years… rarely do teacher salaries keep up with inflation. There are other political issues to get far more pissed about

EBR can’t pay enough to keep teachers. You wouldn’t last one semester. That is the unfortunate truth.
All kids deserve a safe space to learn. Wish I had an answer…..

My kids go to private school, and I don't live in EBR's district anyway, so this doesn't affect me, but if you want to expect better teaching, it's easier to retain and recruit better teachers when you pay more than the surrounding areas. Then, you can let the below average teachers go.

Being a good teacher is difficult. Being a good teacher in EBR is very difficult. Good for them imo.

You must have been trained in government schools. That is not how it works. It’s okay though. You must be one of those middle class guys that Powerman is hating on.

So you do not think there are even a few glorified babysitters in the EBR government school system?
How naïve...

There are some very crappy schools in EBRPSS, and there are some VERY good schools. There are some poor teachers in each school set, and there are some EXCELLENT ones.
Probably THE main problem in the poor school set is the lack of parental support and just caring about the value of an education and backing the teachers.
Teachers in both school sets absolutely need to be paid more, for many reasons - in the poorer performing schools for putting up with what they do, and in the high performing schools for doing what they do well and to keep them from moving to a higher-paying district.
It's really easy to sit behind a keyboard and bitch about salaries, but the massive majority of those that do have absolutely no idea what goes into the job - not just the day teaching, but the paperwork, preparation, conferences, professional development, writing and managing IEPs and 504 plans, etc.
Volunteer in a school one day (preferably one of the lower-performing ones) and then check back in. I beg you.

Who said every teacher was a crappy teacher? It definitely wasn’t me. I think this might be a Freudian slip, my dude.
