Thompson has not played well this CWS and the criticism is deserved. However, the entire bottom of the lineup has tremendously underperformed. In regards to fielding, benching Thompson just isn't realistic when there is no one to replace him. Dugas has an injured shoulder, Nippolt is batting 190 and has made errors in the few innings he has played, and Guidry probably hasn't fielded a ground ball since he was converted to pitcher. Go win the natty and address this in the off-season.

Our fans want to replace Thompson with Merrifield who has… checks notes… no hits this year.

You don’t play 69 games with one SS then bench him in Game 70, the final game of the championship series. You expect a starting SEC SS to get out of his slump and make plays.

190 is better than 033.

This isn’t a slump. It’s the end of a career. I can’t see a pro team taking him after such a choke

Nippolt hit a hard shot up the middle that was ricocheted off the pitchers foot to take a great play to get him out today. I’ll take that over Thompson’s previous 30 at bats. Name any bottom of the order guys that have been botching plays like Thompson. He will play and I hope he does well, but that’s not a good point you’re making.

It’s not a case of struggling. It’s a total collapse. 1/30 batting with multiple errors. I like jt but he needs to sit

That would be an upgrade over JT's .033 average in the CWS.

Nippolt's fld% is .955 vs. JT's is .927 which is the lowest I can find of any LSU shortstop going back a bit.

eta. I'm certain that JJ will not bench Thompson. I know Nippolt won't be the guy. I like Thompson b/c the guy seems to always hustle his arse off. The problem is he's been struggling for a while and now he's fallen off a cliff. If today was a one-off, it would be different.

It's wild that LSU doesn't have decent backup option to play shortstop.

If literally any other position player was performing this bad, he'd be on the bench (outside of maybe Crews and White).

Tiger1988- no response ever warranted. Equivalent to getting Jim from Tuscaloosa’s expertise on Alabama football.

I asked ChatGPT3 about notable hitters going 1/30 in baseball. Take it for what it’s worth but JT isn’t these guys.

They have a back up option in Guidry. The problem is he had to pitch because of all our injuries there.
