Juneau
See Mendenhall Glacier and take the whale watching tour that circles Shelter Island.

Skagway
Take the long tour in to the Yukon Territory that includes a ride on the White Pass Railroad train.

Ketchikan
We usually just hang around town.

ETA a warning about Ketchikan - Don't pay good money to enter the house of ill repute only to be shocked to find out that it is not a house of ill repute anymore, but a museum.

You have to do some kind of whale watching tour. I am fascinated by them and seeing them up close is incredible. You will see plenty from the cruise ship but you don’t realize how high up and far away you are from them until you get on a much smaller tour boat.

There are really no wrong answers. I’ve done 2 Alaskan cruises and can’t wait to go back.

Look into Chilkoot Tours. They do this better than the cruise lines. They use smaller buses so you aren't with that many people. Do the one that does the train one way and the bus the other.

If you want more activity, there are lots of hiking ones from Skagway.

You don't need a tour to do Mendenhall Glacier. It's just outside of Juneau and you can take a taxi or the bus. They you are on your own time and not having to be with a big group.

If you can't tell, I hate tours with huge groups and big buses.

Sounds like a story that should be shared.
